Step-By-Step Instructions

Start on a delightful journey of culinary creation with our expertly crafted step-by-step instructions for crafting mouthwatering apple donuts.

The first step is to gather all your ingredients and tools. You will need a pan and canola oil for frying the donuts in. A large mixing bowl, measuring cups, a rubber spatula, an electric mixer, and a small cookie scoop. For making the donut batter.

A mixing bowl with the two ingredients that it takes to make this recipe.

The ingredients needed are self-rising flour and applesauce. Using room-temperature applesauce is best when making the dough for frying these 2 ingredient donuts. The room temperature applesauce helps to ensure a smoother and more consistent mixing process.

Cold applesauce might cause the dough to react less effectively, resulting in uneven distribution and potential clumping when frying. I used sweetness applesauce but unsweetened applesauce will work as well.

The next step is to mix the two ingredients together in a large bowl. You can use an electric mixer or mix the donut holes batter together by hand.

A mixing bowl that has the 2 ingredients mixed together to make this easy donuts recipe.

You will find that the dough of these homemade doughnuts is a bit sticky. Now you can scoop these donut holes out and drop them into the heated oil.

Or you can scoop them out and roll them in between your palms to create a donut shape. I would suggest that if doing this lightly dust your hands with all-purpose flour. Furthermore, it's important to lightly dust a surface where you can place the rolled homemade donuts on so they don't stick.

Heat the oil, I like to get the oil heating before I mix the two ingredients together. The best oil to use is either canola oil or vegetable oil, it needs to be heated to 350℉.

With the oil heated drop the apple flavored donuts into the oil. Fry the donuts until they become golden brown and are floating. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate.

Pro Tips

Here are some helpful tips to make your 2 ingredient apple donuts turn out great.

When it comes to the oil there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Make sure the oil is hot enough before frying, if it's not the donuts can become greasy. You want to make sure you have enough oil in the pan. Canola or vegetable oil will work best.

The size of the donuts will matter, keep the donuts a bit smaller. So they can cook through evenly and get that crispy outside. I find that using a small cookie scoop really helps with achieving all the same-sized donuts.

Drain off any excess oil from the donut holes, by placing the freshly fried donuts onto a paper towel lined plate. The paper towels will absorb any excess oil from the donuts.

Check for doneness by cutting a donut in half to make sure it's cooked inside. It should be soft, not doughy.

Once the apple donuts are completely cooled, place in an airtight container. These donuts are best consumed the day they are made. But can be stored at room temperature for a day or two. Consider storing them in the refrigerator for a longer period.

These simple tips will help you create delicious apple donuts every time you make them.

Substitutions and Additions

Here are some simple substitutions and additions that can be made for these delicious treats.

If you don't have any self-rising flour you can mix together 1 ¼ cup of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt.

When it comes to the applesauce you can experiment with other fruit purees. Such as mashed bananas or even pumpkin puree. Keep in mind that the flavor will change accordingly.

Enhance the flavor of these apple donuts by adding in a pinch of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, or our homemade apple pie spice. These spices will complement the apple flavor and create a warm, aromatic taste.

For additional taste make them into apple cinnamon donuts. By mixing together a cinnamon-sugar mixture to roll the donuts in. In a separate bowl mix together cinnamon and sugar, I used granulated sugar but brown sugar will also work.

Brown sugar will add a rich, caramel-like flavor and color to the coating. By incorporating this change, you can elevate the overall taste experience of the donuts.

Create a crunchy cinnamon sugar apple donut by rolling the donuts in melted butter and then cinnamon sugar mixture. Or consider rolling the donuts in powdered sugar to create powdered sugared apple donut holes.

Instead of frying these delightful apple donuts, you can bake them in doughnut pans in the oven. Preheated oven to 350 degrees, and bake for 15-20 minutes or until done.

Make them air fryer donuts by lightly coating the donuts with cooking spray. Then place them in the air fryer basket, and cook at around 350℉ for about 8-10 minutes. Turning them halfway through the cooking process.

Incorporate the essence of simplicity and taste with these delightful 2-ingredient apple donuts. Whether you choose to savor them fresh from the fryer or experiment with creative variations.

These homemade apple donuts offer a glimpse into the magic of uncomplicated baking. Don't wait to experience the joy of homemade apple-infused goodness.
