What is a pickle wrapped egg roll you ask?
It’s a pickle coated with cream cheese blanketed by smoked ham, wrapped tightly in an egg roll wrapper. Deep-fried in peanut oil until the egg roll wrapper is golden brown and crispy.
Pickle Wrapped Egg rolls are a great little appetizer recipe or at my house an afternoon snack.
What Is A Pickle Wrapped Egg Roll
Every Thanksgiving we make these pickle wraps, they are very simple to make and are also a favorite with everyone in my family. All you need is lunch meat ham, cream cheese, and pickles.
Lay the ham out, spread as much cream cheese on the ham as you like. Then place a pickle in the cream cheese rolling the ham up around the pickle and cream cheese.
There you have it pickle wraps.
Coming up with the egg roll part
It seems lately that if there are any pickles, cream cheese and any kind of lunch meat in the house my kids can be found making pickle wraps.
I have seen pickle wraps made with turkey and roast beef by my kids, that is how much they love pickle wraps.
One afternoon little lady was wrapping up another pickle. We got talking about how much they love them and what could we do to make them better.
Now we normally are not huge into deep-frying things but I said we should try wrapping the pickle wrap in an egg roll wrapper and deep-frying it. She was more than eager to be my sous chef on this experiment
As I mentioned we are not huge into deep frying so that was one of the holdups in this experiment. We had already been talking about an air fryer, so we thought maybe we should try our pickle wrapped egg rolls in an air fryer.
So I bought one and then I returned one. Sorry all you air fryer fans, it just wasn’t what I thought it was all cracked up to be.
The air fryer didn’t work with these like I had hoped it would. This meant we would be deep frying.
Deep Frying Pickle Wraps
One Saturday afternoon little lady and I started our experiment. Since she is such a professional at making pickle wraps she was more than willing to take on this task with a little help from me.
Usually, when I make pickle wraps I soften my cream cheese up some. I thought it was best not to, this time since they were going into the hot oil.
We cut the pickle wraps in half, to make it easier when we wrapped it in the egg roll wrapper.
I rolled the pickle wraps in the egg roll wrappers making sure to get them tight. If they aren’t tight enough there is a chance of the cream cheese melting out of the egg roll wrapper.
With my cast iron pan, I added 1 cup of peanut oil, this was just enough to cover one side at a time. Honestly, I could have used more oil. Heating the oil up until it seemed hot enough.
Then placing the pickle wrapped egg roll in the heated oil. I deep fried this until they were golden brown on all sides.
We let cool down a bit before we enjoyed them. The cream cheese melted just slightly, the ham was warm, the pickle was still crisp and the egg roll wrapper was crunchy.
These pickle wrapped egg rolls were a huge hit with my family hope your family enjoys them~ Jenny
