Doritos Taco Salad is a quick and easy recipe that is perfect for summer gatherings. This salad is made with ground beef, tomatoes, lettuce, all in a taco mayo dressing.
Whenever we go to cookouts it seems someone always has a taco salad there. After a recent gathering where a delicious taco salad was made, one of my kids asked when was I going to make my Doritos Taco Salad again.
The child is a huge taco salad fan. And is always quick to inform me that others are not as good as mine.
Maybe this child might be a little loyal to me, but I like to think that it’s the dressing on my taco salad that stands out from others.
Taco Salad Dressing
The dressing in my taco salad is what sets mine apart from other taco salads, I think.
I use Miracle Whip, a little bit of sugar, and taco seasoning. The sugar helps tame the zip of the Miracle Whip while the taco seasoning gives the Miracle Whip the taco flavoring that I’m looking for.
Mixing the Miracle Whip, Sugar, and taco seasoning together, I set it aside until needed.
When the dressing is mixed with all the other ingredients it’s a flavor overload.
Since this is a taco salad it will need the fixings that go on a taco all in one bowl.
Browning up a pound and a half of ground beef and making sure to season it with black pepper as well as a little of my homemade taco seasoning.
Of course, you could also add a store-bought package of taco seasoning to the ground beef to give the salad, even more, taco flavor.
With the meat completely cooked drain off any fat drippings. I like to have a soup can under the sink just for this. Add the cooked ground beef into a large mixing bowl.
Chopping lettuce and tomato into bite-size, I add these to the bowl with the ground beef. I also chop a medium-size onion and sprinkle taco flavored shredded cheese into the salad.
Mix all the ingredients together making sure that they are combined well.
Now is time to add the dressing to the salad and mix all the ingredients together, making sure there is a nice coating of dressing on everything.
This salad is best served cold, so I wait until I’m ready to serve before I add the Doritos.
The Doritos will get soggy after being in the dressing for a while, so it’s best to wait to add these until your serving the salad.
I take a 9 oz bag of Doritos and crush them up some. Then I gently fold the Doritos into the salad stirring to combine the ingredients together.
