Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus With Cheese is grilled to perfection for an easy appetizer recipe. Tender asparagus and creamy smoked gruyere cheese are wrapped in salty prosciutto.
Lately, I have really taken a liking to using the grill. With using the grill I don’t have to worry about heating up the house with the stove.
I got thinking about this recipe as I was grilling up our recipe for Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Jalapenos.
We enjoy having prosciutto on our cheese boards and like the taste of this delicate deli meat so why not wrap a vegetable with it.
What Is Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus With Cheese
Prosciutto-wrapped asparagus with cheese is a simple and easy appetizer recipe that can be made on the grill in under 10 minutes.
Prosciutto ~ Proscuitto is basically a thinly cut of Italian dry-cured ham that’s normally severed cold.
We adore having it on our Charcuterie board with cheese and crackers. Since prosciutto is fancy bacon it’s a little on the salty-tasting side. It also has a buttery texture that melts in your mouth.
Smoked Gruyere Cheese ~ Gruyere cheese is a swiss cheese that was originated in Switzerland. It’s a smooth melting cheese which makes it great to use in this recipe.
Gruyere cheese is a sweet cheese with a slight saltiness to it however smoked gruyere cheese you can really taste the smoke flavor. Smoked Gryure cheese complements prosciutto nicely.
Asparagus ~ Did you know once asparagus is planted it takes three years of growing before it can be harvested?
Once asparagus reaches its maturity then it can be harvested every year after for the next 15 years or so. I would say this vegetable is well worth the three-year wait.
Being a Michigan native I was pleased to find out that Oceana County is self-proclaimed asparagus capital of the world. They product two-thirds of our states asparagus, that’s pretty remarkable.
Asparagus is a good source of antioxidants as well as improves digestive health and can help lower blood pressure. It’s also low in calorie so it helps with losing weight.
How To Make Asparagus and Prosciutto Bundles
Let get making this recipe by grating the smoked gruyere cheese with a cheese grater. I used the larger side of the grater for thicker strings.
For this recipe, you will only need a couple of ounces of this cheese.
For the asparagus it’s quite simple, clean it with cold water to remove any dirt. Then break or cut off the “woody” part of the stalk. The “woody” part is the wider part that would have been closer to the ground.
Since the asparagus snaps off easily there really isn’t a need for a knife. I find jobs like this are always great for little hands to help with or in my case idle teenagers’ hands.
To make the asparagus bundles I place a slice of the prosciutto on the counter top. Add a little of the smoked gruyere cheese and two or three asparagus stalks all at one end of the deli meat.
Starting at the end with all the ingredients roll them up to the end of the prosciutto. With the asparagus all bundled up, let’s head to the grill.
How To Grill Asparagus Wrapped In Prosciutto
How to grill the asparagus bundles is easy, first thing is to get the grill up to temperature. I brought our grill up to 400℉.
Grilling the asparagus bundles doesn’t take long. around 3-4 minutes aside. I placed the bundles sideways on the grill grates to get the grill marks I was after.
As the bundles cook, the asparagus will get greener in color and the cheese will slowly melt. Once both sides are cooked sever and enjoy!
These Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus with cheese is a great appetizer recipe and pair great with our Grilled Chicken Kabobs.
