Instant Pot Apple Cake is an easy dessert recipe. A yellow cake mix made with nutmeg layered with canned apple pie filling and cinnamon.
This simple and easy dessert recipe will knock your socks off. Since this Instant Pot apple cake recipe is made with a pantry staples you can make it any time.
How To Make Instant Pot Apple Cake
The Instant Pot has been one of my favorite kitchen gadgets for some time now. The more I use it the more I love it and find it so easy to use.
A few weeks back the kids asked for a dessert after dinner. Not wanting to spend much more time in the kitchen I thought let's see what I can make in the Instant Pot.
Heading to the pantry I found some pantry staples, yellow cake mix, apple pie filling, nutmeg, and cinnamon.
Knowing that the cake would cause that dreaded burn to go on the Instant Pot screen I grabbed my trusty Corningware dish that fits perfectly in my 6-quart Instant Pot.
After preparing the cake mix according to the back of the package, I got thinking about a spice that goes well with apples. Having nutmeg and cinnamon on hand I thought it would be best to add the nutmeg into the cake mixture.
Then sprinkle the cinnamon on top of the apple pie filling.
Dessert Recipe Cook Time
Once I had the cake mix ready I sprayed the baking dish with cooking spray. Then started filling it with the dessert recipe.
Alternating between layers, my first layer was the cake mix, then apple pie filling, cinnamon, and repeating the layers one more time.
The type of baking dish you use it up to you, I have used my 7-inch Corning Ware dish in the Instant Pot many times, so I knew it would fit. You could use a small bundt cake pan as long as it fits in your Instant Pot.
With the baking dish filled with the ingredients, I covered my dish with foil. Then place it on my Instant Pot sling. The sling helps when taking the dish out of the Instant Pot.
If you don't have a sling your trivet that came with your Instant Pot will work.
Since I was using my 6-quart Instant Pot I added a cup of water into the inner pot. You will need to add the required amount for whatever size IP you are using.
Place the sling-wrapped baking dish into the inner pot and place the lid on the IP. Make sure your sealing valve is set to sealing unless you have one that self-seals. I talk about this in my How To Set Up An Instant Pot Duo Nova article.
Press the pressure cooker button and adjust the plus or minus button to adjust the cooking time to 60 minutes. Normally it will take the Instant Pot at least 10 minutes to come to pressure then the cooking time will start.
Once the cooking time is done then let set and do a natural release for 10 minutes. Turn the sealing value to release any steam that might still be in the pressure cooker.
Alternatives That Can Be Used
Remove the lid, using potholders or mini mitts to remove the sling-wrapped baking dish from the inner pot. Remove the foil from the baking dish and serve the cake.
We have found that we really enjoy this dessert recipe with vanilla ice cream, drizzled caramel, and chopped pecans. This Instant Pot apple cake is a great recipe that can be enjoyed all year long since it's made with pantry staples.
One of the things that I love about cooking and baking is how a simple recipe can be changed by one ingredient.
If you are not an apple pie type of person then you could always use blueberry instead. I would omit the cinnamon and nutmeg if using the blueberry pie filling.
Another alternative would be to change the yellow cake mix to a spiced cake mix, again I would omit the nutmeg.
