About This Crock pot Recipe
Slicing the potatoes about ⅛ of an inch thick helps for an even cook. If you have a mandoline that would make slicing the potatoes so much easier. The potatoes I used are russet but Yukons will work as well.
Normally I like to slow cook this recipe on low for 5-6 hours. I have cooked it on high for 4 hours. That's where those potatoes being the same thickness really came into play. The thicker sliced potatoes were slightly undercooked, unlike the thinner sliced ones were cooked all the way.
I do recommend cooking this recipe on low for 5-6 hours that way the potatoes have time to fully cook.
I'm all about making clean-up easier so I like to spray the inner pot of my crock pot with cooking spray.
As I cut the potatoes, ham, onion, and minced garlic I add these into the inner pot of the slow cooker. In a small bowl, I mix together the cream of chicken soup and milk. Next, pour the soup mixture over the ingredients that are in the slow cooker. Stir everything together making sure that the soup mixture covers everything.
Now would be the time to salt and pepper to your liking. Then mix in the three types of cheese. Place the lid on the slow cooker and set it to low for 5 or 6 hours. My slow cooker only has a 6 hour cook time so that is what I normally do.
When you can push a fork into a potato slice and the fork sliced into the potato easily. An uncooked potato will feel like it's trying to stop the fork,
The cheese that is used in this recipe is what makes it an au gratin potato recipe.
Yes, they can. If they are overcooked the potatoes will become soggy.
