Ingredients Needed
In this section, we will talk about the ingredients that are needed to make this easy slow cooker apple cobbler. As well as give substitutions for these ingredients.
Cake mix~ Try experimenting with the cake mix, there are so many cake mix flavors to choose from. You are sure to find the perfect match to fit your liking. For this recipe, you could use either a spice, yellow, or white cake mix. I decided to use a spice cake mix to bring in a more fall like flavor to this crockpot apple cobbler recipe.
If you choose to use a white or yellow cake mix you could add some additional spices to the dry cake mix before covering the canned apples with it. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove would work wonderfully with the apple pie filling. A chocolate cake mix with cherry pie filling would also taste amazing.
Pie filling~ I try and have a couple of varieties of pie filling stocked in my pantry just for these types of desserts. Try switching out the apple pie filling for blueberry or peach pie filling. Either of these would taste amazing with a white or yellow cake mix. If you are using a spice cake mix, peach pie filling would taste delicious with it.
Or how about jazzing up the apple pie filling by adding cranberry to it. Of course, you could take fresh apples and make a delicious homemade apple filling recipe. Sweeten this cobbler up more by sprinkling the top of the apple filling with a bit of brown sugar.
Butter~ I used unsalted butter that I melted in the microwave. Salted butter will also work. I also found for me that ¾ of a cup of butter worked best to cover the top of the cake mix with. If you find this is too much butter cut it back to ½ cup.
How To Make Slow Cooker Apple Cobbler
Slow cooker apple dump cake is simple to make, start by spraying the inside of the crockpot with nonstick cooking spray. Then simply dump 2 cans of apple pie filling into the bottom of the slow cooker. Add your preferred kind of cake mix on top of the apples.
In a small bowl that is microwave safe melt the butter, then pour the melted butter evenly on top of the dry cake mix. Place the lid on the slow cooker and set it on high for 2.5 hours.
Serve this warm apple cobbler with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and a little caramel sauce. This sweet treat would be the perfect ending to a delicious family dinner.
Tips
When it comes to the butter I do find that the butter will run to the sides of the crockpot. My suggestion to help with this would be to have the sides of the cake mix a bit higher than the middle. Kind of creating sidewalls to hold the butter in. Try and get the center of the cake evenly covered with the butter. And make sure that the dry cake mix is evenly spread over the apple pie filling.
If you want a slight crispiness to the top of the cobbler remove the lid after the two and half hours, then cook for another 15-30 minutes. This cake mix apple cobbler is best served warm and can be easily reheated in the microwave. Add a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped topping, and drizzle with a bit of caramel syrup. Mmmm makes a wonderful dessert.
Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. This easy dessert recipe can also be frozen. Once the cobbler has come to room temperature scoop the apple cobbler into an airtight container and store it in the freezer for up to three months. Try dividing this recipe up into individual portions when freezing it. Then the kids or big kids can have their own apple cobbler whenever.
This 3 ingredient crockpot apple cobbler recipe makes the perfect ending to a pork chop or chicken dinner. Of course, it is also a great recipe to take along to family gatherings during the holiday season.
