Buffalo tater tots in a white plate.

Buffalo Tater Tots are frozen tots that are coated in a spicy butter buffalo sauce then oven-baked to crispy perfection. This easy side dish recipe is a great way to change up frozen tater tots.

In our home, we have some of us that love frozen tater tots while others are more for French Fries. Okay so the French fries person in our home is me, I totally could go for baked fries any day of the week.

A side dish of tater bites that is on a white plate.

That is until I started making these simple spicy buffalo tater tots. Oh my goodness are these so delicious. You can control the amount of heat they have by the type of hot sauce used and by the amount used.

Not only are these spicy tater tots delicious but simple to make.

How To Make Spicy Tater Tots

The ingredients to make baked tater tots.

For these easy buffalo tater tots, you will need frozen tater tots, butter, honey, and your favorite hot sauce. Yup, that is it, four ingredients!!

Gotta love those simple recipes that only take a few ingredients to make.

In a medium-sized bowl melt, the butter then add in the honey and hot sauce. Mix these three ingredients together.

A bowl that has a butter sauce in it.

Let's stop and talk about hot sauce and peppers. Hot sauce is measured on a Scoville scale. The Scoville scale measures the spiciness of peppers and other spicy foods.

Just to give you an idea of what the hottest pepper on the Scoville heat until scale (SHU) is. That would be the caroline reaper at around 16 million SHU, now that is spicy!! Whereas a jalapeno ranks around 2,500 to 8,00 on the SHU scale.

Now back to the sauce, we all have heard or have used Frank's red hot. This is a great sauce and ranks around 450 on the SHU for their original red hot sauce.

My bottle of Frank's was empty so I decided that was time to try something different. I found Tapatio hot sauce at my grocery store.

Tapatio has an overall ranking at around 3,000 on the SHU scale making it hotter than even sriracha.

Either one of these hot sauces will work. Depending on the type and how hot they are will determine how spicy the tots will be. As well as how much hot sauce you add into the butter.

I added two tablespoons of the Tapatio sauce for my buffalo sauce. You can add more or less that's up to you.

Baking The Tater Tot Bites

Taters in a bowl that has a butter sauce coating it.

Once the buffalo sauce is mixed together add the frozen tater tots into the bowl. Coat the tater tot bites with the buffalo sauce making sure that all the taters are covered.

With the buffalo tater tots coated place them on a sheet pan. I'm about easy cleanup so I like to use foil or silicone liners where I can. For this recipe, I placed foil on my sheet pan and did a light coating of cooking spray.

Tater bites on a sheet pan.

As the buffalo tater tots are placed on the sheet pan make sure that they are spread out as much as possible, this will allow them to bake up crispy. This is the time that I like to add a bit of salt to the tater tots.

Place the sheet pan into a preheat 425℉ oven for 35-40 minutes.

If you like extra crispy tater tots then you could bake these longer. If you have an air fryer this recipe would also work in there.

Dip these buffalo tater tots into blue cheese or ranch dressing for a change to ketchup. These tots go great with our Sloppy Joe's or Gumbo Burger recipe.

We hope you enjoy these spicy buffalo tater tots as much as we do.
