These old-fashioned buttered noodles are topped with a crispy Ritz cracker crumb topping. Tender Amish-style egg noodles are cooked in a chicken broth that is rich in flavor.
Fully cooked noodles are then coated with butter and topped with a roasted ritz cracker crumb. Making this the perfect side dish recipe for Sunday dinners or any holiday meal.
If you have ever been to Michigan's sweet little Bavaria town of Frankenmuth then you may have heard of The Bavarian Inn or Zehnder's. Both of these amazing restaurants serve a delicious family-style chicken meal. I'm talking you don't walk away from there feeling hungry.

Our family likes to go to Frankenmuth at least once a year. We truly love visiting this beautiful town. On a recent trip with my girls, we sat down to enjoy a chicken dinner at Zehner's restaurant.
After walking away full of so much delicious food. One of the girls said that I really needed to make these buttered noodles with crumb topping recipe at home. I believe I have been successful at recreating the buttered noodles recipe we enjoyed at the restaurant.
Buttered Noodles With Crumb Topping Ingredients
This recipe isn't that hard to make other than the crumb topping is made in a small skillet while the rest of the recipe is done in a large skillet. What you need for this side dish recipe is.
- chicken broth
- water
- chicken flavor better than boullion
- egg noodles
- butter
- Ritz crackers
- fresh parsely
- and more butter
In a large skillet add in the water and chicken broth. If you want to use a homemade chicken bone broth that will work great otherwise store brought is great. Whisk in the chicken flavor better than bouillon.
The better than bouillon brand is so much better to use than regular bouillon. I love this brand and highly recommend it. They have many flavors to choose from and all have a great flavor to them.
With the bouillon mixed into the water add in the butter, then place the skillet onto the stove. Cover the skillet with a lid, over high heat bring the liquid to a full boil.
Part of what makes this recipe so delicious is the egg noodles. It's not very often I say spend the extra dollars on something but I'm here to tell you these Amish egg noodles help make this side dish.
Once the liquid comes to a full boil add in the eggs noodles bring them back to a full boil. With the egg noodles at a full boil, reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered, you want the noodles to cook without the liquid evaporating. Cooking for 8-10 minutes or until pasta is tender.
Crumb Topping Recipe
While the egg noodles are cooking on medium-low make the crumb topping. I like to place the Ritz crackers in a sandwich bag and use the rolling pin to crush them.
In a small skillet melt butter then add in the crushed crackers. You are roasting these to get more crunch to the crackers. So you will want them browned in color, careful not to over roast.
With the eggs noodles fully cooked remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the remaining butter. You can really tell this is an old fashion recipe with all the butter that is used. But it wouldn't be buttered noodles without a lot of butter.
I like to serve this side dish as we got at the restaurant and that is in a bowl family style. Sprinkle the crumb topping on top of the noodles along with finely chopped parsley.
This recipe is so delicious butter noodles with crumb topping is served with chicken but really any type of meat would be great. I can see this being a great side dish at Thanksgiving.
