And created this fabulous double chocolate bread recipe that has chunks of chocolate nestled into a moist crumb.
If you are a chocolate lover like me then you are going to love this moist banana bread recipe. This has to be the best chocolate banana bread ever. It's rich in chocolate flavor as well as being a super moist bread.
What Makes This Chocolate Banana Bread So Special?
What makes this banana bread recipe special is the rich chocolate flavors that are mixed with the perfect amount of banana flavor. The use of unsweetened cocoa powder and semisweet chocolate chips. Gives this quick bread recipe a rich chocolate flavor.
Like most of my baking recipes, I always start out by sifting the all purpose flour. I find it's best to sift the flour as well as the other dry ingredients to remove any lumps there might be. Having the dry ingredients sifted will help incorporate them into the wet ingredients better.
I also have found the best bananas to use in any of my banana bread recipes are overripe bananas. As the banana becomes overripe they have a higher sugar concentration which makes them taste sweeter. The more brown the bananas are the sweeter they are. I have also added an extra banana into this recipe before to bring in more banana flavor.
Over-ripe bananas will also help make the bread moist. Which makes them perfect to use in banana bread. This recipe calls for oil which will also help with making the bread moist and tender.
To help the bananas incorporate with the wet ingredients I find it's best to use mashed bananas. This can be done by using a fork or the paddle attachment to my stand mixer or a potato masher. Once the bananas are mashed add in the white sugar, milk, vanilla extract, oil, and the slightly beaten egg mixture.
Mixing It All Up
Once the banana mixture is all mixed together start to add in the dry ingredients you will want to do this slowly. When using an electric mixer I find it easier to add a little at a time so I don't end up giving myself a flour bath.
For best results be careful not to over mix the batter. Overmixing will cause more gluten to develop which will result in a dense rubbery banana bread. The end goal for this bread is to be moist.
When all the sifted flour has been added to the banana mixture, I like to fold in the chocolate morsels. I haven't had a problem with the chocolate chips sinking to the bottom of the loaf pan. But you could roll the chocolate chips in flour to help make sure they don't.
I think the extra chocolate chips really add extra chocolate flavor to this double chocolate banana bread. You could also mix in some chopped walnuts or peanut butter chips to the top of the whole loaf as well.
Baking Chocolate Banana Bread
When I do any bread baking I tend to use glass loaf pans. I find that a glass loaf pan will give me a more even bake. You can you metal if you like, the baking time may vary depending on the baking pan used.
Preparing the loaf pan can be done by either spraying it with nonstick cooking spray or lining the loaf pan with parchment paper.
Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, and sprinkle the top of the chocolate loaf with more semisweet chocolate chips. If you added chopped walnuts into the batter you could sprinkle some of those on top of the bread as well. You could also change out the semisweet chocolate chips for dark chocolate chips for a richer chocolate flavor.
If you want two loaves of bread you could easily spilt the batter in half and add into two separate bread pans. If you do this I would top each loaf with ½ cup of chocolate chips.
Place the loaf pan into a preheated 350℉ oven for 60-70 minutes. The baking time will depend on your oven, mine seems to be on the slower cooking side as of lately. So it took my oven almost 70 minutes to bake this loaf of bread.
Be careful not to overbake the chocolate banana bread because it will be dry. Setting a timer helps me to know how long my baked goods have been in for.
Around the last 10 minutes of baking, I will check for the doneness of the bread. A good way to tell if the bread is close to being done is if you can smell it. When I start to smell the bread then I know I need to check the doneness.
The best way to test if the bread is done is by inserting a toothpick into the center of the bread. You may have to try a few spots because of the chocolate chips.
Tips For Cooling and Storing
With the chocolate banana bread completely baked place it on a wire rack to cool. Once the chocolate loaf has fully cooled on the cooling rack, slice it into individual slices. If you want a warm slice of bread wait about 15 minutes then slice it into the loaf.
This bread will last up to 3-4 days sitting at room temperature and covered with plastic wrap or stored in an airtight container. It also freezes well. When the bread is completely cooled wrap the loaf in foil then place it into a freezer ziplock bag.
This will last in the freezer for up to one month. However, if your family is like mine they will love this bread and it will not last long at all.
My favorite way to enjoy this delicious chocolate banana bread is it is. However, a pat of butter would taste amazing on this decadent bread. This moist bread with chunks of chocolate tastes amazing with coffee first thing in the morning. My kids like to heat a slice of this bread up in the microwave the next day to enjoy as an afternoon snack.
