How To Make a Chocolate Bundt Cake With A Cake Mix
I love to bake but understand not many like to or they might feel that they don't know how to bake.
Today, I'm here to help you make a delicious chocolate bundt cake that uses a cake mix and instant pudding.
You can also find some great baking tips in my article Baker's Dozen 13 tips and tricks for baking.
The ingredients you will need for this bundt cake are:
- chocolate cake mix~ I used devils food for a richer chocolate flavor
- chocolate instant pudding
- sour cream
- eggs
- Water
- vegetable oil
- chocolate chips~ I used both mini and regular sized morsels.
- baking spray
The baking tools that you will need are:
- Bundt Cake pan
- 2~ mixing bowls
- measuring cup
- mixer ~ either a hand mixer or stand mixer will work
- oven
- rubber spatula
First, start by putting the chocolate cake mix into a large mixing bowl. If you are using a stand mixer use that bowl.
You can use any type of chocolate cake mix that you prefer, I wanted a rich chocolate flavor so I used devil's food cake mix.
In a smaller mixing bowl, add ¼ cup of the cake mix from the larger bowl. Then add the chocolate morsels into the reserved cake mix and coat them with the cake mix.
Sitting the cake mix coated chocolate morsels aside until the rest of the ingredients were combined.
Doing this helps the morsels to suspend into the batter and not sink to the bottom of the cake. Any remaining cake mix that doesn't coat the morsels will mix into the batter.
Next, you can add to the cake mix the chocolate pudding, sour cream, eggs, water, and vegetable oil.
Start mixing these ingredients together using either a hand or stand mixer. Since this recipe uses pudding it will be a thicker batter, so I recommend using either one of those mixers.
Once those ingredients are mixed together fold in the chocolate morsels. Making sure to get the cake mix that didn't coat the morsels mixed into the batter well.
What Makes A Cake A Bundt Cake
What makes a cake a bundt cake you ask. A bundt cake is any type of cake that is baked in a bundt cake pan.
There are many sizes and designs of bundt pans, this giving your cake different looks.
All bundt cake pans have a hole in the middle. This lets the batter touch more sides of the pan then a normal cake pan. Giving more crusty sides to the cake.
Taking your favorite bundt pan spray the pan with a nice coating of baking spray. This helps the cake from sticking to the inside of the pan.
Now that the cake ingredients are prepared it's time to add the batter to your bundt cake pan.
Remember this is a thicker batter so you will have to scoop it into the pan instead of pouring it. Giving the bundt pan a few taps on the counter will help spread the batter out into the pan.
How Do You Know When A Bundt Cake Is Done?
Place the bundt cake into a preheated 350℉ oven and bake for 50-60 minutes or until done. The baking time will depend on the size of your bundt pan and your oven.
How do you know when the bundt cake is done? There are a few ways to know when the cake is done.
One of the first signs I notice when a recipe is close to being done is the smell. If you can smell the cake that means it's getting close to being done. I recommend checking it.
One way to check is by looking at the cake and seeing if it's starting to move away from the sides of the pan. And if the cake looks like its set and not jiggly when you move the pan then it's done.
Another way is when you press gently in the center of the cake and it feels springy.
Or you can also use a skewer to insert it into the cake. If it comes out without batter on it then that means the cake is done. You might want to try a couple of places.
I happened to stick my skewer into a chocolate morsel so my toothpick didn't come out clean the first try.
How Long Do You Wait To Turn Out A Bundt Cake?
Once the cake has baked it's time to remove it from the oven to let cool. I recommend letting it sit on a cooling rack for 10-20 minutes.
Waiting this long gives the cake enough time to become firm. So when you remove it from the pan so it won't break.
If you cool the cake too long in the pan it can become damp causing it to stick to the pan.
To turn the bundt cake out of the pan, place a cake plate on top of the bundt pan. Flip the plate and the pan over at the same time. The cake should come right out of the pan.
Let your chocolate bundt cake cool more and then sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
