Two Margaritas in classes on a wood board.

Classic Margarita with fresh lime juice is a great salty, sour, sweet combination that is simple to make with your favorite tequila. This cocktail is made with tequila, triple sec, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice. It's a simple refreshing drink to enjoy at any time.

We have been trying different cocktail recipes for the last few months. One of them that I have absolutely fallen in love with is this classic Margarita cocktail.

It's a little different than I normally drink, I usually go for fruity/rum drinks like the Bahama Mama. Maybe since the Margarita is made with lime juice it gives me that citrus taste that I like.

As with most drinks, the invention of the Margarita is claimed by several people but regardless of its origins, the Margarita is a popular drink today with many variations including the frozen Margarita.

Our recipe is a take on the classic recipe with a little added sweetness from the simple syrup to make a great salty, sour, sweet combination.

Simple Margarita Recipe

This Margarita recipe is simple to make, made with just a few simple ingredients you can make this cocktail recipe at home. No more buying those margarita mixes. What you will need is tequila, triple sec, simple syrup, fresh lime juice, and coarse salt.

Tequila ~ The Margarita highlights the tequila so a good quality tequila will make all the difference in the taste of your drink.

We've tried several brands of tequila over the years and have come to prefer Patron the best. However, this can be kind of expensive to buy so we only use it for special occasions like testing new cocktail recipes.

Another great one that we found we enjoy is 1800 Silver, its less expensive of an option. We did test our Margarita recipe with both types of tequila and each tasted really good.

Triple Sec ~ Triple sec has become a staple in our home bar. Our Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri and Mimosa recipe use it as well as this Margarita recipe. We have found that we like the slight orange flavor that triple sec brings to cocktails.

Simple Syrup ~ Simple syrup brings that added sweetness and also helps to tame down the lime juice a bit. You can make your own simple syrup or you can purchase a bottle at your local store. Since we didn't need much simple syrup in the cocktail we thought it best to purchase the premade.

Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice ~ Fresh lime juice is what makes this recipe even better. We thought we would give the concentrated lime juice a try and quickly realized the mistake we made. The freshness adds the right amount of citrus taste to it. Whereas the concentrated adds more of a bitter taste.

Bar Tools Needed

We have a nicely stocked bar when it comes to tools but this cocktail recipe is pretty basic when it comes to the tools needed. Here are the tools you will need to make a classic margarita with fresh lime juice at home.

Two Margarita cocktails on a table with limes.

Shaker ~ A shaker is the most essential tool for mixology. Shaking your cocktails gives a good mix to all the ingredients. Adding ice to the shaker before you add the liqueur helps to chill the cocktail quicker.

Plus you won't have a watered-down drink because you won't have to sever the cocktail over ice.

Lime Squeezer ~ We have found that fresh-squeezed lime is best for this cocktail. So a lime squeezer is a must, or do like we do and use a lemon squeezer. You could also squeeze the lime by hand. Popping the lime in the microwave for a few seconds helps bring out even more of the juices. In turn, giving you more juices for your margarita.

Margarita Glass ~ A margarita glass isn't necessary as long as you have a 5-ounce glass. However, using a Margarita glass gives you more room for salting the rim to enjoy with each sip.

Lime Wedge ~ We used a lime wedge to run around the rim of the glass. The lime juice will give the next ingredient something to adhere to. We also used a lime wedge for a garnish on the glass.

Course Salt ~ Once we had the juice of the lime on the rim of the glass we added coarse salt to it. Part of the experience of a margarita is the salted rim. You can find coarse salt in the liquor section of your grocery store or at a liquor store. To kick this up a notch add lime peel to your course salt.

Pour your shaken Classic Margarita with fresh lime juice into the salted glass, garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy. This cocktail recipe is a favorite for celebrating Cinco de Mayo or anytime you're craving a great refreshing cocktail.

This week we are answering the question "what's there to drink" with simple recipe creations~ Jen
