Not sure about you but when life gets busy the last thing I wanna do is spend all evening in the kitchen cooking. I mean I love to cook but family time is also important. I just can't express how simple this recipe is to make in the slow cooker with few ingredients. Let's get to slow cooking this chicken and gravy recipe.
How To Make
Not only is this chicken and gravy recipe simple and tasty but it can be made with frozen chicken breast. Taking meat out for dinner has always been something that isn't at the top of my to-do list. I often forget to, so if I can use frozen meat in a recipe I totally will.
So when I set out to make this recipe I only had frozen skinless boneless chicken breast to use. Even though it was frozen it cooked up perfectly and shredded so easily.
Using fresh chicken breast will also work for this chicken and gravy crockpot recipe. The cooking time may be more on the 4 hours cook time than the 6 hours it took for the frozen breast to cook up.
To make this crockpot creamy chicken and gravy recipe. Add into the inner pot of the slow cooker chicken broth, cream of chicken soup, and a chicken gravy mix. Mix these three ingredients together then add in the chicken breast and season.
Set the slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours. The time will depend on if you are using frozen or thawed chicken breast. The last time I made shredded chicken and gravy in the crockpot I only had frozen chicken breast so it did take 6 hours on low for the chicken to cook fully.
Once the chicken and gravy have fully cooked in the crockpot go ahead and shred the chicken. With the chicken fully shredded mix it together with the gravy.
Best Way To Shredded Chicken
There is no need to get fancy with tools for shredding chicken. All I do is use two forks and pull the chicken apart while it's still in the crockpot. You could also use your hand mixer to shred it.
Or even remove the chicken from the crockpot and place it into the mixing bowl of your stand mixer. With the paddle attachment mix the chicken until it is all shredded. I find that using two forks is easy and works best for me but of course, use the method that you are more comfortable with.

Water will work just fine in this recipe. The chicken broth just brings in more flavor. You could mix water with chicken bouillon as well for more flavor.
Adding in thyme, oregano, sliced mushrooms, or sliced onions can change up this recipe. You could add in one of these or all of these for a twist on the flavor of this shredded chicken and gravy recipe. You could also mix in some veggies for more of a chicken pot pie feel to this recipe.
If the gravy isn't thickened enough for you make a corn starch slurry by using 2 tablespoons of water and corn starch. Mix the corn starch and water together to make a slurry then stir into the chicken and gravy. Place the lid of the crockpot back on a cook on low for 10 minutes. Or until the gravy is thickened to your desired thickness.

This looks amazing. Can I use chicken thighs that are skinless instead of breast?
Jennifer
Chicken thighs will work as well.

Is there a substitute for the chicken gravy mix? For example, could I use poultry seasoning?
Jennifer
I would say the best substitution would be to use premade chicken gravy or even Greek yogurt and cut back or remove the water/chicken broth. I have not done either of these so not sure if it would taste as well as the original recipe does.
