One of my goals for this year is to take control of my health. I have let stress run my life the last year or so and it's about time I made some changes.

Looking for healthier options in many areas of self-care I feel that cutting some of the processed foods out would be helpful. Making a homemade seasoning blend is just one area that can be changed.

In this article, we will share how you can make your own blend of seasonings for tacos. We will also share what types of foods you can season this blend with.

Come along with us as we help to put a little spice in your day.

What Spices Are Used In Homemade Taco Seasoning

I have been making my own taco seasoning for a while. Now don't get me wrong I do use the store-bought seasoning from time to time.

However, with cutting back on processed food I figured this would be a great place to start.

Spices in jars with a bowl that is filled with them.

On the plus side, this blend of fresh seasonings is great to have on hand to season not only ground beef but other foods.

The spices that I use for this blend are all ingredients I have in my pantry already. Normally the store-bought seasoning doesn't cost much. But if I already have the spices in my pantry so why not make homemade.

Chili Powder is the base of this seasoning mix. It brings a southwest flavor as well as some heat to the blend.

Ground Cumin brings a little bit of a nutty flavor with not much spice to our blend. Cumin works well with a variety of recipes like stews, meats, rice, and vegetables.

Onion and Garlic Powder are aromatic and pair well with many other spices. Making them ideal for this blend.

Red Pepper Flakes will bring a little heat to our blend. I like a milder heat to my taco seasoning. But if you like more heat this is the spice that will bring on the bigger heat factor.

Dried Oregano adds an earthy flavor to the blend.

Paprika~ depending on the type of peppers that are used to make the paprika. Will determine the color as well as the heat level of the paprika.

I love using Hungarian paprika, it has a sweeter taste to it.

Salt and Pepper bring more spice flavor to the seasoning. You can reduce these amounts to better fit your taste.

How To Make The Seasoning

Making homemade taco seasoning is simple. The only tools you will need are an airtight container and measuring spoons.

Seasonings in a bowl.

What I like to do is take a pint-size mason jar with the lid. As I measure out the spice I add it into the mason jar.

Once I have added all the spices I'll put the lid on the jar and shake the jar to blend the spices together.

I'll store the majority of the spice in the mason jar but I also have some in a spice jar in my spice cupboard.

As I'm cooking I'll use it just as a spice blend for recipes like black beans, rice, on to chicken, or even a little sprinkling on scrambled eggs.

Of course, this seasoning mix is perfect on any type of ground meat, to make into tacos for Taco Tuesday night. Add 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning with ½ cup of water to every pound of ground beef.

So if you are making two pounds of ground beef I would recommend using 4 tablespoons of seasoning and 1 cup of water.

Bring the seasoned meat and water to a simmer on low until most of the water evaporates. Leaving you with perfectly seasoned taco meat.
