These easy bbq meatballs are a little bit sweet with not too much tangy to them. The meatballs are made from scratch using ground beef and ground pork. Then coated in a simple sauce that is made from grape jelly and bbq sauce.
I love making homemade meatballs, they are so simple to make and taste delicious. I also love finding new ways to use my homemade meatball recipe.
Our meatball sandwich and Swedish meatballs recipe are just a couple of ways I use them.
We like bbq sauce so I figure I would try making bbq meatballs. I didn't want them to be too sweet or tangy.
The grape jelly balances the tanginess of the bbq sauce. While the bbq sauce balances the sweetness of the grape jelly. Making the perfect sauce to coat our meatballs with.
In this article, you will learn how to make meatballs from scratch as well as what side dish goes with bbq meatballs.
How To Make BBQ Meatballs From Scratch
When I make meatballs I like to use two types of ground meat. Using ground beef alone the meatballs will tend to be dry.
However, adding ground pork into the mixture will help to have juicier and tender meatballs.
In a large bowl add the ground beef and pork along with diced onions, minced garlic, bread crumbs, eggs, parsley, and a blend of seasonings.
Mix all these ingredients together until all are combined. If the meat mixture feels a little wet add a little more bread crumbs to the mixture.
You could also add a splash of Worcestershire sauce to enhance the flavor of the meatballs.
Careful to not overwork the meat mixture or else the meatballs will become tough as they cook.
Once the meat mixture is mixed together you can form it into balls. Since these were going to be the main staple of our dinner I made the meatballs larger.
If you are going to use these bbq meatballs for a potluck I would recommend making them smaller in size. I also should have diced my onion up smaller, but they still tasted wonderful.
Using my hands to form the meatball and I just kind of eyeballed the size according to my hand. As a meatball was formed I place it into my baking dish, I ended up with 19 meatballs.
The amount you get will vary depending on the size you make your meatballs into.
Grape Jelly And BBQ Sauce
With the meatballs formed and all nestled in the baking dish, it's time to whip up a simple bbq sauce.
In a large bowl mix together a jar of grape jelly and bbq sauce. These two ingredients make a great bbq sauce.
For the grape jelly, I used the store brand, and for the bbq sauce, I used Sweet Baby Ray's. You can use your favorite bbq sauce and it will taste great.
I wanted the sauce to cook into the meatballs to help keep them juicy and add to the flavor. So I poured the sauce over top of the raw meatballs.
You could bake the meatball for 30 minutes then drain any grease that might have formed in the dish. Then add in the homemade bbq sauce for the last 30 minutes of cooking time.
The bbq meatballs need to bake in a 400℉ for an hour or until no longer pink in the middle. These meatballs bake up fork tender with the perfect about of sweetness and not too tangy of taste.
What Sides To Sever
What sides go with bbq meatballs you may be wondering. Since I made these for dinner I made our buffalo tater tots recipe to have with them.
French fries or even a simple pasta recipe would also go well with these.
If you were making these for a cookout or a potluck they would go perfectly with our Seafood salad recipe. Even macaroni or potato salad would be a great side dish recipe.
Basically, these BBQ Meatballs go well with most potluck recipes. Since we are talking potluck these would make for a great dish to take to your next get-together.
