Looking for summer grilling ideas? This grilled hot dog recipe is quick to make for a simple dinner or lunch recipe. Add chili, cheese, and grill the buns for an over the top hot dog.
Kids Lunch Ideas
With the kids home for the summer finding lunch ideas that they will eat can be a challenge. They are sandwiched out after the school year and would prefer to eat something that is hot.
Of course, heating up the oven in the summer isn't ideal, so I headed out to the grill for this one.
Fortunately for me, my kids don't mind hot dogs, as long as they have some goodies loaded on top of them.
So I got thinking about how I can change the ordinary hot dog up for them. This is what I came up with.
The first thing I did was cut the hot dogs down the middle so they could lay flat. I find doing the hot dog like this makes grilling it easier.
The hot dog lays flat on the grill.
With the cut side down I placed the hot dogs on the grill. Cooking for 3-4 minutes on each side. Starting with the cut side first helps keep them flat.
You can go longer if you like a more done hot dog, my kids prefer their hot dogs on the lightly done side.
I love when hamburger buns are grilled so I thought why not grill the hot dog buns. Spreading butter on the inside of the buns then placing them face down on the grill for 2-3 minutes.
The butter helps get the crispiness to the buns but it also helps the buns not stick to the grill.
My grill seems to be hotter in the back so those buns had more of a burned look but not taste to them.
Over The Top Dogs
Once the hot dogs and buns were grilled I placed each hot dog on a bun.
Like I said my kids like hot dogs loaded with goodies. So I added Tostitos dipping cheese, chili dog sauce, and red onion.
You can also add ketchup and mustard if you would like, we found these dogs to be great without.
You get that grilled hot dog flavor on a toasted crunchy bun that is loaded with the creamy cheese and chili sauce with the little spicy crunch of the red onion.
This was definitely an over the top kind of hot dog that has the kids asking for it again.

Grilled Hot Dog With Chili
Over the top grilled hot dog and bun that is topped with creamy cheddar cheese and chili sauce. With a sprinkle of red onion.
Ingredients
- 8 Hot Dogs
- 8 Hot Dog Buns
- Butter Enough to spread some on each bun
- 1 can Chili Sauce I used Hormel Chili with Beans
- 1 Jar Cheddar Cheese Sauce I used Tostitos Brand
- ¼ Cup Red Onion diced Optional
Instructions
-
Heat the grill up. I turned all three burners on high and let it come up to 350 degrees. Then dropped the burners to medium low for cooking.
-
Taking the hot dogs out of the package I split them down the middle length wise. So they looked like they were butterflied.
-
Place the hot dogs spilt side down on the grill and cook 3-4 minutes on each side or until you have the desired doneness you want.
-
Spread the butter on the inside of each of the hot dog buns.
-
Place the butter side of the buns down on the grill and cook until crispy. This took me about 2-3 minutes to achieve the crispness I was looking for.
-
Dice the red onion into small bite size pieces, set a side.
-
Open the can of beans, place into a bowl and heat up in the microwave. Set a side until ready to assemble hot dogs.
-
Heat the jar of cheddar cheese sauce in the microwave. Set a side until ready to assemble hot dogs.
-
Place the hot dogs on buns. Spread chili, cheddar cheese sauce, and sprinkle with onion.
-
Add any other condiments that you prefer and enjoy.
