These Ham And Cream Cheese Roll-Ups with pickle or onion are a delicious appetizer and easy to make. They make for a perfect snack or appetizer recipe to serve to a crowd that can be made ahead of time.

Deli meat smothered in cream cheese then wrapped around a pickle or green onion. Nothing more could say the holidays to me than these roll-ups.

A staple to most of our holiday meals is these pickle wraps or onion wraps. Most of the time it's both and sometimes we have them other than for special occasions.

Since they both use just about the same ingredients they go perfectly together. Here is how I put together these simple ham and cream cheese roll-ups.

What Are Ham And Cream Cheese Roll Ups?

Ham and cream cheese roll-ups are an appetizer recipe that is made with green onions or pickles. Then wrapped in a ham lunch meat that has been coated with cream cheese.

Whenever I make either type of these roll-ups I will use a honey ham lunch meat. I prefer a ham that is on the thicker side however you could use a thinner ham if you like.

To help the cream cheese spread onto the ham better I make sure to use room temperature cream cheese.

Pickle Wraps

Pickle wraps are one of those appetizer recipes that are a must-have on our Thanksgiving or Easter dinners menu.

If you are a pickle lover like I am then you are going to love these pickle wraps. Not only are they tasty but they are simple to make.

When making pickle wraps I like to use Claussen Spears. These are my favorite pickles, they have a nice crunch to them as well as taste. Claussen pickles are refrigerated, so normally I find them next to the packaged lunch meat at the grocery store.

I like to pat the pickle off onto a paper towel before I start wrapping the pickle in the prepared ham slice. This will help to absorb some of the pickle juice and make wrapping the pickle easier.

For the ham, I used our store brand which is a thicker honey ham. Boar's Head has a cooked ham that would be close to our store brand that I used. Of course, you could use any type of lunch meat or even deli meat.

One of my kids will even make pickle wraps using pastrami. So basically any lunch meat works great with pickle wraps.

Make sure that you are able to cover the pickle spear with whatever type of ham or lunch meat you use. You could even use two slices of ham layered on top of each other.

For the cream cheese, I have found that it will spread on the ham easier if it's at room temperature. There have been a few times that I forgot to get the cream cheese out.

So I placed it onto a microwave-safe plate and zapped it for a few seconds to soften it. If you do this don't go for too long because the cream cheese will get really runny.

Spread the cream cheese onto a full ham slice evenly, add a pickle then roll the pickle up in the ham. Make sure to roll the pickle wrap tightly so it will stay together.

Onion Wraps

It seems like every Thanksgiving or Easter dinner I can remember onion wraps being part of the meal. Although sometimes they were called Polish roses, depending on who's home we were at.

Polish roses on a cutting board with a toothpick in one.

Onion wraps are just like the pickle wraps but only replace the pickle with green onion. Start by placing the onions in a water bath and let soak for a few minutes.

Then I will cut the roots off and slice the greens down to fit onto half of a slice of ham.

Next, I will peel the first thin layer of the green onion off. By removing the thin layer it will make eating the onion wraps easier.

Just like with the pickle roll-ups I will spread the room temperature cream cheese onto a half slice of ham. Then place a green onion on top of the cream cheese and roll it up.

For either of the ham and cream cheese roll-ups, you can leave whole or slice into bite-size pieces.

If you are a little unsure about eating a whole onion. Then you could finely chop the onion up and mix it into the cream cheese and spread that onto the ham slices.

Both of these ham and cream cheese roll-ups with pickle or onion are a favorite of our family. They are often both served at our holiday meals.

Ingredients

Pickle Wraps

  • 8 Ounces Cream Cheese Room temperature
  • 10 Slices Honey Ham lunch meat see notes
  • 10 Spears Pickle Spears

Onion Wraps

  • 8 Ounces Cream Cheese Room temperature
  • 5 Slices Honey Ham lunch meat Cut in half
  • 10 Whole Green Onion

Instructions

Pickle Wraps

  1. Start spreading 8 ounces of the room temperature cream cheese on 10 whole slices of the ham. Making sure to cover as much of the ham as you can.

  2. Pat the 10 pickle spears off onto paper towels to remove some of the pickle juice. Place on of the pickle spear at the short end of the ham covered cream cheese. Begin rolling the pickle spear up in the ham toward the other end.

  3. To make these bite sized you can cut them into smaller slices or enjoy a whole pickle spear.

Onion Wraps

  1. Start by washing your green onions in cold water to remove any dirt. I will let them soak for a few minutes in water to help loosen any dirt from the onion.

  2. While the onions are soaking in water take the 5 whole slices of honey ham and cut them in half.

  3. Cut the root end off of the green onion then cut the green part of the onion down to make the onion the size of the half slice of ham. I like to peel the first layer off of the onion skin, this makes eating it easier.

  4. Spread the other 8 ounces of room temperature cream cheese onto the halves of the ham slices. Place the prepared onions onto the short end of the ham and begin rolling up towards the other end of the ham.

  5. Again you can enjoy the onion warp whole or you can slice them into bite-sized pieces.
