A bowl of noodles that is covered with homemade alfredo sauce.

The best homemade alfredo sauce is made with heavy cream in my option. Making alfredo sauce with heavy cream makes for a creamy rich white sauce. Not to mention this recipe is easy to put together in a matter of a few minutes.

This rich and creamy sauce is perfect to coat fettuccine noodles with. And to serve along with some grilled chicken and steamed broccoli for a complete dinner idea.

Make pasta night a hit with this homemade alfredo sauce with heavy cream recipe that is rich in flavor. This indulgent white sauce taste so much better than any store-bought brand. Since we use heavy cream in this recipe you get a creaminess to this sauce. The fresh parmesan cheese brings so much flavor to this recipe as well.

How To Make

Making homemade alfredo sauce with heavy cream is quite simple. In a saucepan add butter and heavy cream then bring to a simmer. Simmer is when you see a few gentle bubbles in the white sauce. It's best to simmer on low so the sauce doesn't get scalded.

A close up of creamy white alfredo sauce with heavy cream dripping off a spoon.

Once the alfredo sauce has simmered for 2 minutes. Add the Italian seasoning, pepper, and minced garlic into the sauce. Continue to simmer for 1 more minute. Stir or whisk in the freshly grated parmesan cheese and stir until the cheese has completely melted.

I have made this with store-bought shredded parmesan cheese. Since the store-bought cheese is coated with cellulose. I didn't need as much cheese, the sauce thickened well.

After doing some testing, I found that 2 cups of parmesan cheese that was shredded from a block was the perfect amount. You really can't go wrong with the fresher taste you get from the block cheese as well. It sure is worth taking the time to shred it by hand.

I have made this white sauce recipe using only 1 ½ cups of freshly grated parmesan cheese. The alfredo sauce was a bit thin but still packed a lot of flavor.

If you find that the sauce is too thin then you can let the sauce sit for 2-3 minutes to thicken. Or you could make a simple slurry with corn starch and water. I found that I like it a bit on the thinner side.

What Is Alfredo Sauce

Traditional alfredo sauce is made with pasta water, parmesan cheese butter, and salt. Then it would need to be thickened with a roux that is made with flour and butter.

I find that using heavy cream in this recipe omits the need of making a roux and gives you a creamy alfredo sauce. However, if you find the sauce is too thin for you a slurry may be the way to go. I do like to bring more flavor to this easy homemade white sauce by adding minced garlic.

I just love the taste of fresh garlic and it really enhances the flavor of this alfredo sauce. Also, I like to sprinkle in a bit of Italian seasoning to bring in even more flavor.

Questions and Substitutions

How do you thicken heavy whipping cream for alfredo sauce? So if the sauce is too thin for you there are a couple of things you can do. The first being let the sauce sit for a few minutes before serving. This will help it set up a bit.

The second would be to make a slurry of equal parts water and corn starch. Slowly add the slurry to the alfredo sauce careful not to add in too much at a time. You wouldn't want to over thicken the sauce.

What Is traditional alfredo sauce made of? Traditional alfredo sauce is made with pasta water, parmesan cheese, butter, and salt. Then thickened with a roux.

Is heavy whipping cream better than half an half for alfredo? I would say heavy whipping cream is better but half and half would work as a great substitution. The heavy whipping cream makes the white sauce creamier and richer.

What can I substitute heavy whipping cream for? Whole milk would be a great substitution for heavy whipping cream in alfredo sauce. Making with whole milk you most likely will want to thicken it with a slurry of equal parts water and corn starch.

This easy to make homemade alfredo sauce with heavy cream is perfect to cover fettuccine noodles with. Add a bit of protein to this simple white sauce recipe with grilled chicken breast or shrimp.
