Baked beans on a plate
Baked beans on a white plate with the words Homestyle Baked Beans down in the lower left corner.

Little lady and I love Homestyle Baked Beans almost as much as we love potato salad. I think she could eat them for a week straight and not get sick of them.

When I pick the kids up from school each day their first question to me is how was your day?

Then what's for dinner?

At least they are thoughtful and ask me how my day was before asking for food.

So when I picked up little lady from school earlier this week she was quick to ask her daily question.

When I told her Homestyle Baked Beans her eyes lit up and I knew there wouldn't be any complaints about that night's dinner, at least not from her.

How To Make Baked Beans

In my opinion, baked beans need bacon and I mean a lot of bacon. Normally I'm not big on the bacon but for my homestyle baked bean recipe, I add a whole package of bacon.

White bowl filled with baked beans

You can add as much or as little bacon as you like.

First I start by covering a cookie sheet with foil this helps make clean up easier, you don't have to if you don't want to.

I placed the bacon on the foil and put the cookie sheet in a 400℉ oven for approximately 20 minutes. I didn't want the bacon to be very crispy just cooked all the way.

When the bacon was done I remove it from the grease and let it cool some and then chopped the bacon up some. I left my bacon pieces kind of bigger, you can cut them into your desired size.

Okay so I cheat a little here and there with my cooking and my homestyle baked beans are no exception.

I like using a jar of great northern baked beans because I don't want to wait for the dry beans to soak,  the Bush's baked beans give it a little more of the flavor I'm after.

Using a 9x13 baking dish I made sure to spray it with cooking spray. When baked beans cook they can really bake onto the dish, again another one of my cleaning up tips.

Opening the jar and the can of beans, I added both of these to my baking dish.

On top of the beans, I added diced onion, brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, yellow mustard, and then the bacon.

I like adding the ketchup and brown sugar for adding a bit of sweetenest to the baked beans. The mustard and onion I used as a form of spice, the molasses acts as a thickener and add a richer color to the baked beans.

Once everything was added I made sure to mix the ingredients very well to make sure that everything was incorporated.

Baking the beans

With everything mixed, place in a 400℉ oven for 1 hour and 30 minutes. I find the longer the baked beans cook in the oven the thicker they will become.

This recipe pairs great with my Sloppy Joes recipe and is also a great cookout recipe.

Just look at those yummy golden homestyle baked beans. I bet you can't wait to get the ingredients to make these baked beans.
