Moist, tender, and perfectly seasoned chicken breast made in an Instant Pot. This Instant Pot shredded chicken recipe freezes well and is ideal for meal prepping.

Using an Instant Pot is the easiest way to make chicken breast for shredding. It's quick and easy to make not to mention that chicken breast is healthy for you.

How To Make Shredded Chicken In The Instant Pot?

Making shredded chicken in the Instant Pot is simple and quick. If you meal prep at all then this recipe needs to be one of your go-to's. Shredded chicken can be used in many recipes.

What you need to be able to make shredded chicken in the Instant pot is.

  • Instant Pot~ I use a Duo60 6 quart
  • Chicken Breast
  • Chicken Broth ~the amount of liquid will depend on your IP size
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Garlic Powder
  • Black Pepper
  • Forks ~ for shredding

Place the chicken into the inner pot of your IP. Season the chicken with the seasonings.

Pour the chicken broth into your inner pot.

Options you have for the liquid is homemade bone broth, store-bought chicken broth, water, or water mixed with Better Than Chicken Bouillon.

Front of an Instant Pot that the shredded chicken will be made in.

Place the lid on your IP and set the manual timer, (some IP's have pressure cook buttons) to 20 minutes on high pressure. Your Instant Pot will take about 10 minutes to come to pressure, give or take. Once it comes to pressure then the timer will start counting down the twenty minutes.

When the timer is done do a natural release. This means to turn your release valve to venting. Stay clear of the steam because it can burn. Will all the steam released start shredding the chicken with two forks.

What Type of Liquid And How Much Do I use?

I highly recommend the better than chicken bouillon if you don't have chicken broth or bone broth. The flavor Better Than Bouillon adds to recipes is amazing.

If I'm out of the homemade chicken bone broth and the store-bought chicken broth. I will take 1 cup of water and 1 teaspoon of the Better Than Chicken Bouillon and mix together.

Since the Better Than is a paste it will take some time to dissolve. If I know I will be using the Better Than this will be my first step. Having this mixed up while I'm prepping everything else gives the bouillon time to break down and dissolve.

The amount of liquid that you should use for this recipe depends on the size of your IP and what is recommended for that size. Since I have a 6 quart the minimum amount of liquid is 1 cup. From what I read (because I don't have an 8 quart, yet 😄) an 8 quart IP needs 1.5 cups of water.

How Do I shred Chicken in the Instant Pot?

I like to take two forks and shred the chicken right in my Instant Pot. The chicken will absorb a little of the juices that are in the Instant Pot. This adds more flavor to the chicken. You can also use a handheld mixer or a stand mixer to shred the chicken.

Can I freeze Shredded Chicken?

Yes, shredded chicken can be frozen. What I like to do is fill a Ziplock bag with the shredded chicken and add about 6 tablespoons of the chicken broth that was left in the IP from cooking.

Adding the chicken broth will help give more flavor to the chicken. Being able to freeze the shredded chicken makes this recipe perfect for meal prepping.

Can I Make Shredded Chicken In A CrockPot?

You sure can!! The only difference is the amount of liquid needed and the cooking time. When I make shredded chicken in the crockpot I use ½ cup of liquid. Depending on the time of day I start to cook the chicken will determine the temperature I use on the crockpot.

For high, I will cook the chicken for 3 hours. My crockpot doesn't have 3 hours for high so I set a timer since I am home. For low, you will need to set it for 6-7 hours.

We like to use this shredded chicken recipe for our BBQ Chicken Sliders.
