Step-By-Step Directions

Making these autumn-inspired goodies is a breeze, and we are here to guide you through it, step by step.

A saucepan with melted marshmallows, spices, and pumpkin puree in it.

To begin let's gather all the ingredients we need: unsalted butter, marshmallows, pumpkin puree, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and rice cereal.

We also need a couple of tools, a large saucepan, and a 9x13 baking dish that's been coated with unsalted butter. A rubber spatula, measuring cups, and spoons.

Into the large pot melt the butter over medium heat. Add in the marshmallows and melt them completely. Add in the pumpkin puree and spice, and mix together until all combined.

Allow the marshmallow mixture to cool for a bit before adding in the cereal.

After the marshmallow mixture has slightly cooled, stir in the crispy cereal until combined. If you wanna add in extra mini marshmallows now would be the time.

Then gently press the sticky mixture into a 9x13 baking dish that has been coated with butter. I recommend not to use non-stick cooking spray. The cereal will absorb the spray and make the treats soggy.

Use a piece of wax paper or parchment paper to help keep the pumpkin pie rice krispie treats from sticking to your hand. Allow the pumpkin spice classic treats to sit for 30 minutes before cutting into them.

Ingredient Roles And Creative Twist

All the ingredients needed for these treats.

In this section, we are going to talk about the roles of each ingredient. As well as what creative twist we can make to these pumpkin treats.

Like the classic Rice Krispie treats rice cereal is the foundation of these delightful treats. They provide that signature crispy texture. You could change out the plain crispy rice cereal for cinnamon sugar Rice Krispie cereal.

Cinnamon Toast Crunch or golden Grahams would also be a great substation to the rice cereal. Make these treats colorful by adding some orange food coloring to make these treats orange in color.

Mashmallows are the sweet gooey wonders that bind everything together and give your treats that classic chewy quality. I used large marshmallow which equaled about 12 ounces.

You could try using pumpkin spice marshmallows for added pumpkin spice flavor.

Unsalted butter brings a touch of richness that enhances the overall flavor and ensures the marshmallows melt smoothly.

Pumpkin puree is the star ingredient that infuses your treats with warm, earthy notes. Real pumpkin or pumpkin pie filling can be used as a replacement for the puree, keep in mind that canned pumpkin pie filling does have added sweetness and spiced to it.

So you may want to adjust the spices that are added to this recipe.

Cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice add a cozy aromatic flair to your pumpkin spice rice krispie treats. Instead of buying pumpkin pie spice at the store, you could use a teaspoon of our homemade pumpkin pie spice recipe.

These spices can easily be adjusted to your liking by adding more or less in.

Try adding in homemade vanilla extract for a hint of vanilla to balance and enhance the flavors. Or you could use maple or almond extract just be cautious with the quantity.

Since these extracts can have a stronger flavor than vanilla extract. I would start with a smaller amount and adjust to your taste preference.

Use white chocolate chips to add to the gooey treats or to create a white chocolate drizzle for the tops of the rice krispie treats. Add a bit of crunch to the tops of the sticky treats with chopped walnuts, almonds, or pecan. Or sprinkle some pumpkin season sprinkles on top.

A baking dish filled with the treats and two more pumpkin pie squares in front of the dish.

Spread a layer of cream cheese frosting on top for a creamy contrast to the crispy base.

These ingredient variations offer a world of possibilities for customizing your pumpkin spice Rice Krispie treats to suit your taste and the occasion.

Common Questions

In this section, we will answer any questions there might be for this easy recipe.

How long will these treats stay fresh?

If properly stored in an airtight container these cereal bars will stay fresh for 2-3 days at room temperature.

Yes, you can. Once the treats have been set up you can cut them into individual squares. Then wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe container. These will last 2-3 months in the freezer.

Can I make these treats in advance for a party?

Definitely! You can make these treats a day or two ahead of your event. Just store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

How do I prevent my Rice Krispies treats from turning out stale and soggy?

By not overcooking the butter and marshmallow mixture. Keeping the treats at room temperature and not refrigerating will also help keep them fresh. When packing the treats into the baking dish don't compact them, this will make them harder. Also, make sure to use butter not nonstick cooking spray in the baking dish. The cereal treats will absorb the cooking spray.
