Puppy Chow Recipe (Muddy Buddies)

The best muddy buddies puppy chow ever!! Made with only four ingredients and only takes a few minutes to make. This simple no-bake dessert recipe is irresistible.

Every year we get invited to our friends for a barn party. They have a live band that is absolutely amazing, everyone brings a dish to pass, and there is a lot of catching up between friends.

One year I brought muddy buddies puppy chow, it was a big hit. So much so that their daughter will text my daughter asking that I bring puppy chow.

This snack recipe is absolutely delicious and is simple to make. I do want to make note this recipe is not for dogs. Even though we call it puppy chow it's not for dogs only people.

Muddy Buddies Puppy Chow Recipe

Okay let's start with the name of this recipe, why is it called puppy chow. It's called that because its look resembles that of puppy food.

Surely this is not for dogs or puppies this is people's food only.

I have also heard it called monkey munch and of course muddy buddies. Whatever you call it is sure is a delicious snack recipe.

The first step is to melt together chocolate and peanut butter. Place equal parts of each into a microwave-safe bowl. I only heated mine up for 30 seconds then stirred until smooth.

I used chocolate chip morsels, those chocolate candy melts would work as well.

With the chocolate and peanut butter mixture smooth pour overtop of the cereal. Normally I only put half of my cereal into the bowl then pour the chocolate mixture on top.

Mixing together until the cereal is all coated.

Then add in the rest of the cereal one cup at a time. Stirring after adding each cup of cereal until I have added all the cereal.

You want to make sure that the cereal is coated evenly. That's why I do a little at a time.

With the cereal coated with chocolate mixture, it needs to chill a bit. You want it at or below room temperature.

So placing it in the fridge for 10 minutes works great. However, if the chocolate gets too hard the powdered sugar won't stick to it.

Next, it's time to coat the cereal with powdered sugar. Again I like to add one cup of powdered sugar at a time. This helps make sure that all the cereal is getting coated.

Placing the muddy buddies puppy chow into a culendar will help sift off any extra powdered sugar.

Substitutions And Storage

Whenever I can I like to share substitutions for recipes. This recipe only has a couple. The first would be the cereal itself.

You can go with the name-brand rice cereal however the generic will work just as well. Sometimes I use my store brand, I feel that it tastes the same.

Now let's talk about chocolate. Whenever I make it I use Nestle chocolate morsels. Any chocolate you like will work, as long as it melts.

Those chocolate candy melts would be easy to use since they are designed to melt easily.

For storing puppy chow you will want to have it in an airtight container. You can either store it at room temperature or in the fridge.

It should last one week in the air-tight container. I say should because I know at my house it never lasts a week.

Did you know that you can also freeze muddy buddies? Yup, once again as long as it's in an airtight container. It will last up to 2 months in the freezer.

Whether you call it muddy buddies, monkey munch, or puppy chow this simple no-bake recipe is delicious. It's also a great recipe for beginners.
