I learned to make a lot of 30-minute meals growing up. And to this day I still love these easy types of dinner ideas.
Who would have thought that hamburger steak also known as Salisbury steak would be a quick 30-minute meal?
Today I'm going to show you how I make our hamburger steak with mushroom and onion gravy. This classic recipe makes for a great 30-minute meal idea.
What Is Hamburger Steak
Hamburger steak is made from ground beef that is seasoned with a blend of seasonings and sauces. Bread crumbs are added to the ground hamburger to hold the steak patties together that are then fried in a skillet.
The hamburger steak patties are simmered in a rich beefy gravy. That's made from French onion soup with sliced mushrooms and onions that deepens the flavor of this classic recipe.
How To Make Hamburger Steaks
To add extra flavor to the ground beef I like to mix a simple sauce together. In a small bowl whisk together ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, better than bouillon beef flavor, seasoning salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
Into a larger bowl add the ground beef, bread crumbs, and the sauce. The bread crumbs will help to bind everything together.
And the sauce will add not only flavor but a bit of moisture so the patties don't dry out. Combine all the ingredients together. I prefer to use my hands since I will have to make the mixture into patties next.
Be sure not to overwork the meat mixture this will cause your steak patties to become tough. As the meat cooks it will contract and the more you mix the meat mixture the more it will contract while cooking.
Since I used 1.5 pounds of ground beef, I will get 6 medium-sized hamburger steaks. Turn the meat mixture into 6 medium-sized oval burger patties by shaping them with your hands.
As I work at making the patties I like to place the burger patties onto a sheet pan that has been lined with wax paper. This allows me to make sure they are all about even in size.
How Long To Cook For
On medium-high heat add the olive oil and butter into the skillet. Once the butter is melted add the hamburger steak patties into the hot skillet.
Fry the burger patties until each side has a nice crisp outer side. Make sure that there is no pink on the inside. This took me about 4 to 5 minutes a side on medium-high heat.
In a measuring cup add beef broth and cornstarch. The cornstarch will thicken the gravy. However, if you like thicker gravy then more cornstarch may be needed.
Next, pour the beef broth mixture into the skillet with the burger patties. Then add the mushrooms, onions, and French onion soup into the skillet.
On medium-high heat, simmer the patties for 8 minutes uncovered. Let the Salisbury steaks with mushroom gravy rest covered for 10 minutes.
This will allow the gravy to thicken. Again if you like a thicker gravy then you may want to add more cornstarch.
Not only is this easy recipe a great 30-minute meal but it is also a budget-friendly meal since it's made with ground beef.
Serve this classic hamburger steak with an onion mushroom gravy recipe along with mashed potatoes to help soak up that flavorful gravy. We like to have asparagus as a veggie to complete this meal.
