Ingredients For Salted Caramel Cookies
The ingredients for salty caramel chocolate chip cookies are relatively simple. And they come together to create a gooey treat that's sure to satisfy.
All-purpose flour plays a crucial role in the structure of these cookies. It provides stability to the cookie dough which will allow the cookies to hold their shape while baking.
The flour also contributes to the overall texture of the cookies. It adds a slight chewiness to the center. While allowing the edges of the cookies to turn golden and crispy.
Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate. Is used as a leavening agent in these salted caramel cookies. It will help the cookies to rise and create a softer more tender texture.
Baking powder like baking soda is a leavening agent and will help with the rising of the cookies. It will also help to create a light and fluffy texture.
Unsalted butter that is at room temperature is used to create that rich buttery flavor without added salt. Softened butter will blend in with the sugars better.
Crisco shortening is used in the salted caramel cookies recipe to act as another solid fat. Crisco will help the cookies to hold their shape and prevents excessive spreading during baking time. It also will help give the cookies crispy edges with a soft interior.
Both granulated sugar and brown sugar are used and play essential roles in creating the perfect texture and sweetness in these salted caramel cookies. The white sugar contributes to the overall sweetness of the cookies. As well as helps to create a crisp and golden exterior for the cookies.
Brown sugar adds a caramel-like flavor and adds a moist texture to the cookies. The combination of the white and brown sugar in the cookie dough provides a balance of sweetness and moisture.
Eggs help to create structure and bind together all the ingredients.
Vanilla Extract enhances the flavors of the other ingredients. Try making our homemade bourbon vanilla extract. It's sure to enhance the flavor of these cookies.
Chocolate Chips or chocolate chunks and caramel pieces add to the sweet aspect of these chewy caramel cookies while sea salt makes these salted caramel cookies.
How To Make
After I preheat the oven to 350 degrees, I sift together all the dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Then into either a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer cream together the room-temperature butter, Crisco, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, I feel room temperature eggs incorporate into the other ingredients better. Add in the vanilla extract. Then slowly add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients until all are combined.
Mix in the caramel pieces, chocolate chips, and if adding walnuts add those in. I'm a big believer in using cookie scoops for even sized cookies, scoop the cookie dough out onto prepared baking sheets.
You can either prepare the cookie sheet with a silicone liner, or parchment paper or use nonstick cooking spray.
I also like to take the back of the cookie scoop and press the dough down a bit to flatten it some. Then sprinkle some flakey sea salt on the top of the flattened cookie dough.
Bake cookies in a preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges of the cookies are golden brown. Remove the cookies from the oven but leave them on the cookie pan for 5 minutes.
During these 5 minutes, the cookies will start to cool and set up. Transfer the salted caramel cookies to a wire rack to completely cool.
Tips, Serving, And Storing
I love to share any tips I can think of to help make making our recipes as easy as possible. For these sea salt caramel cookies using accurate measurements is important. Using measuring cups and spoons that are specifically for dry or liquid ingredients will ensure precise measurements.
Quality ingredients such as fresh eggs, real butter, and pure vanilla extract. Can have an impact on the overall flavor and outcome of your cookies.
Room temperature butter will cream together better with the sugars. Which will result in a smoother more even textured cookie dough. When creaming the butter with the sugars, mix until they are light and fluffy. Using an electric mixer or stand mixer will give optimal results.
Keep a close eye on the cookies as they bake as to not overbake them. You want the edges of the cookies to be lightly golden but still have a slight softness in the center. The cookies will continue to firm up as they cool that 5 minutes on the baking sheet.
When it comes to serving these sea salt caramel cookies allow them to cool for 10-15 minutes on a cooling rack. That way the cookies are not too warm to enjoy but yet warm enough to really enjoy.
Even after the cookies have fully cooled we like to place them in the microwave, heating them up for a few seconds. Serve with an ice-cold glass of milk or with a warm cup of hot chocolate or coffee.
Turn these into a full dessert by reheating some and serving with vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel topping. Don't forget to sprinkle on a pinch of sea salt.
Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-5 days. Baked salted caramel cookies can be frozen for up to 3 months. Once the cookies have fully cooled place in an airtight container or wrap in plastic wrap and place in a ziplock bag.
