Sub sandwich on a plate with chips. There is a tall glass with beer in it and more sub behind the plate.

Hero Sandwich is layers of deli meats and cheeses piled on a French Loaf or Italian bread. Add your favorite toppings for a complete sandwich that makes for a great lunch recipe.

Who doesn't like a quick and easy sandwich? I mean they can be made for lunch or for dinner.

Sometimes life calls for soup and sandwiches. We like to have hero sandwiches along with a bowl of soup in the winter. Or in the summer a submarine sandwich with chips hits the spot.

Hero Sandwich Or Sub Sandwich

Layers of deli meats and cheeses piled between two slices of bread and call it a sandwich. Change that bread out for your favorite French or Italian loaf and you have a sub or is it a hero?

From what I have read it depends where you are from as to what you call it. Whether you call it a sub or hero sandwich they both are piled high with deli meats and cheese and make for a great meal.

French Loaf Or Italian Bread

When making subs I will use either a French Loaf or Italian bread. For me, it depends on a couple of things as to which type of bread I will use.

If I'm buying the bread at the grocery store I will choose whichever is on sale. Or if the store only has one or the other then that is the one I go with.

Sometimes if I plan ahead I like to make my own French loaf. Nothing beats homemade bread, right? If I don't make my own I will buy from our local grocery stores bakery.

French loaf is a longer thinner loaf of bread that has a crispy outside. However, the inside of a French loaf is soft which makes it perfect for Sub sandwiches.

Italian bread is a bit shorter and plumper than a French loaf. Italian bread also has a tender interior and crispy exterior that's a bit denser. Either type of bread will work in making a submarine.

Making A Sub Sandwich

A french loaf made into a sandwich

Every now and again we like to have soup and subs for dinner. I find this to be a quick and easy dinner that everyone enjoys. My favorite way to make subs are on a French loaf.

Sometimes we go crazy and add tons of meats but other times we keep it simple and use deli meats that we all enjoy.

Pastrami and ham seem to be the two types of deli meats we all enjoy and they make a terrific sub. I will either use deli meats from the deli counter or choose from the lunch meat selection in the grocery store.

We must not forget about the cheese as well. Provolone is our go-to cheese for most sandwiches. Sometimes we like to spice it up a bit and add pepper jack cheese to our submarines.

Taking a French loaf I slice it in half lengthwise. Placing a layer of cheese down on the loaf first. Then I will add whichever deli meats we have chosen on. Top the deli meat with yet another layer of cheese.

Place the top of the French loaf back on. Now you can enjoy the sub sandwich like this or kick it up a notch.

To Bake Or Not To Bake

I love to have my subs toasted a bit. So once I have the top of the loaf on I will spread a coating of butter onto the top of the French loaf.

Place it into a 350℉ oven for 20-30 minutes. The time depends on how crispy you want the bread to be. You get a nice crispy bread, melted cheese, and warm deli meat.

Slice the loaf into 6 pieces top with your favorite toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, and onion. Maybe a little mayo and mustard or Italian dressing.

You can serve with chips or as a side with a warm bowl of your favorite soup. Either cold or warm these sub sandwiches are super quick to make and delicious to eat.
