Turtle brownies start with our delicious killer fudge brownie recipe. That is then smothered with a simple creamy caramel sauce and sprinkled with pecans and chocolate chips.

If you like turtle candies as well as brownies then you are going to love this turtle brownie recipe. Whenever we stop at a specialty candy store I always have to try the homemade turtle candies.

Turtle candies have to be my favorite candy. Creamy caramel that covers pecans then coated with chocolate, oh my goodness amazing. Thinking about these delightful candies made me want to try to make homemade turtle brownies.

If you have read some of my other blog posts then you know I love simple recipes. These caramel brownies are a simple recipe to make.

Turtle Brownies Recipe

Ingredients to make the dessert recipe.

To make this easy dessert recipe I started with my fudge brownie recipe. However, I did alter the recipe a bit to make a smaller batch.

For the brownies, in a saucepan, I added room temperature butter and unsweetened and German baking chocolate. That I had chopped up into small pieces.

Butter and chocolate in a sauce pan.

Having the room temperature butter and chopping the chocolate will help them melt together quicker. Making the mixture less likely to burn.

In a saucepan melt the butter and chocolate together on low heat, once the mixture is melted then add the eggs, vanilla extract, and sugar.

Melted chocolate and butter with sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract in a saucepan.

Stir the ingredients together until combined. Then stir in the flour until it is combined with the other ingredients.

To help minimize the chance of the brownies sticking to the baking dish. I always like to spray my baking dishes with cooking spray. In the prepared baking dish pour the brownie mixture in.

To help prevent air bubbles in my baked goods. I like to tap the baking dish on the counter a little bit to help minimize the chance of air bubbles. Place the baking dish into a preheated 350℉ oven for 20-30 minutes.

The time will depend on a couple of things. The size of your baking dish as well as your oven. I used an 8x8 baking dish and my oven seems to bake a little faster.

Baked dessert in a baking pan.

The brownies only took 20 minutes to come out fully cooked in my oven. Inserting a toothpick into the middle of the brownies will help to tell if they are fully baked.

If the toothpick has nothing on it then they are done, if it does then you will need to bake for a few more minutes. The baking time may vary depending on the oven.

Caramel Brownies

Caramels and milk in a bowl.

Now that you have made your brownies from scratch. You will need them to cool down before adding the toppings.

I let the brownies set on a cooling rack for 10 minutes to cool before adding my toppings. As the brownies cooled I started on the caramel sauce. In a microwave-safe bowl add the caramels and milk. Place into the microwave and heat for 15 seconds, then stir.

Keep doing this in 15-second intervals until the caramels are almost melted. With the caramels to the point of being fully melted stir to make the sauce creamy.

Once you have the caramel sauce made pour it onto the cooled brownies. Using the back of a spoon spread the sauce over the top of the brownies.

Then sprinkle pecans and chocolate chips. To help the turtle brownies cut better, I placed them into the refrigerator for 10 minutes. This will allow the caramel to set up.

Answering Questions

An easy dessert recipe on a cutting board with milk.

Why does my brownies taste like cake? Using baking soda and baking powder will help give a lift to the brownies. Thus creating a cake-like brownie. Over mixing the batter and too much liquid can also cause brownies to be more cake-like.

How do you get brownies to cook evenly? To get brownies to cook evenly make sure to spread the brownie batter out into a pan as evenly as possible. Next, make sure to preheat your oven to the correct temperature. If brownies are placed into an oven that is too hot or too cool then they will not bake up evenly.

Why are they called turtle brownies? Turtle brownies get their name from the turtle candy. The candy resembles the look of a turtle. Layers of caramels, pecans, and melted chocolate give the look of a turtle.

What does a turtle brownie taste like? Rich chocolate flavor brownies coated in a creamy caramel sauce that has been sprinkled with pecan and walnuts.

These brownies almost taste like turtle candy but in a baked form.

I hope your family enjoys these delectable turtle brownies as much as my family does. These brownies seem to disappear as fast as I can make them.
