This homemade sweet and salty trail mix recipe is a great sweet and salty snack idea. Trail mix is a great recipe to enjoy for snack time or to take along on hikes.
Even enjoy this simple snack around the campfire. You will want to have the ingredients on hand all summer long to enjoy this snack mix.
Turn up your summer snacking game with this simple-to-make sweet and salty trail mix. What I love about this simple recipe is it satisfies that sweet and salty craving I get. I can't be the only one that thinks peanuts or pretzels go better with chocolate.
Anyway, it's an easy snack recipe to enjoy around the campfire, take with you on a hike, or even for road trips.
When the kids were little and money was tight our entertainment was a campfire in the yard. I would make a batch of this trail mix and we would enjoy this as a snack while sitting around a nice fire.
I have also made it many times to take along with us on an adventure. Another great thing about this sweet and salty trail mix recipe is you can mix it up and get creative with it.
If you aren't a raisin fan simply leave them out or maybe you would rather have yogurt-covered raisins instead. The choices can be endless.
Trail Mix Ingredients
Even though I say the choices are endless I like to stick to this simple recipe when I make it. I'll explain what I use and what you could substitute if you like.
The base of my trail mix recipe always starts with peanuts for the salty part and semi-sweet morsels for the sweet part.
Pretzels or cashews would be a great salty change and the semi-sweet morsels could be changed to dark or white chocolate morsels.
Adding raisins into this snack brings a natural sweetness to the recipe. However, you could change out the raisins for yogurt-covered raisins or simply leave them out.
Dried cranberries would be a great change from the raisins.
Moving on to the candy part of this delicious trail mix recipe. M&M's are a must in my books, don't most people like M&M's? However, you could change the M&M's out for Reese's pieces.
Okay quick confession time, this next candy isn't always one that I add to my trail mix recipe. I like to add Reese's mini peanut butter cups but my store didn't have them. So I bought these Hershey's Cookie Bite.
They did not disappoint at all, so yummy! Chocolate malted balls would be another great change. The last of the salted goes to the sunflower kernels. Change out the sunflower kernels for pumpkin seeds. Or maybe even flax seeds.
Once you have all the sweet and salty trail mix ingredients in a large bowl. Carefully mix everything together. The raisins like to stick together so they will need to be worked apart a bit.
When my kids were young, I would have them get involved in making this trail mix recipe. They loved being able to add everything into a ziplock bag and then mix it that way.
So if you have little kids they may enjoy making this recipe with you.
Storage And How Long
This trail mix recipe will last about a month if stored in an airtight container. When I make up a batch of this trail mix I will store it in a ziplock bag in the pantry.
Honestly, it never makes it a month in my home.
The kids and I absolutely love this simple sweet and salty trail mix. It's hard not to reach in for a handful throughout the day because it tastes so good.
