Win your Valentine's heart over with these Valentine's Day Cake Balls that are made with a strawberry cake mix, cake frosting, and melting chocolate.
These cake balls are the perfect dessert to go along with that romantic dinner you have planned for your Valentine's.
How to make Cake Balls
Making these cake balls is really simple. I used a strawberry cake mix but if you have a cake that you make from scratch it would work just as well.
I also used a store bought strawberry cake frosting and two types of melting chocolate for dipping, one in red and one in pink.
You can use white melting chocolate to decorate the top of the cake balls. In the Amazon link below are all the ingredients I used to make these cake balls.
The first thing I did was make the cake according to the box. I baked it in a prepared 9x13 cake pan. Once it was fully cooked I let it cool.
This next part is great fun if you are like me and have helping hands in the kitchen. When my youngest was in second grade she was bullied a lot. To the point, she would cry to go to school.
To help make her feel better when she was at home. I would come up with creative crafts or baking to do with her. These cake balls are something we really enjoyed making together.
This is the part that she liked the most. With clean hands, of course, crumble the cake up into a large bowl.
Forming The Cake Balls
With the cake all crumbled up it's time for you to add the frosting. Again I just used store-bought frosting. To me strawberry kind of goes with Valentine's Day so that's the flavor of cake frosting I used.
I have used cream cheese frosting in the past with other flavored cake mixes.
The reason why I use frosting is to help form the cake into balls. Depending on how moist your cake is will depend on how much frosting you use.
I used about half of a tub of frosting to make my cake balls. Now that you added the frosting to the crumbled cake mix together.
Sometimes life calls you to play with your food. And this part would be great fun for those little hands again. Or if you're like me your hands.
You can make your cake balls as big or as small as you like. I scooped out the moistened cake with a tablespoon.
Then rolled it into a ball using you guessed it my hands.
I placed the cake balls on a waxed paper-lined cookie sheet. Once all the cake balls were formed I placed them into the refrigerator for a couple of hours.
This helped to firm them up for when I was ready to dip them in the melted chocolate.
You could also put them in the freezer but I would warn not to leave them in too long. I seem to have cake balls come up missing before I am able to dip them into the chocolate.
I know I wouldn't want to have an emergency visit to the dentist for a chipped sweet tooth.
Melting Chocolate
After the cake balls have had time to firm up in the refrigerator. I melted pink and red chocolate melts in a double boiler. When the chocolate is completely melted I used a fork to roll the balls in the chocolate.
Then placed the chocolate-covered cake balls back onto the waxed lined cookie sheet.
With all the cake balls dipped into the chocolate. I place them back into the refrigerator so that the chocolate could harden.
I had some white melting chocolate that I drizzled a little over the top of each cake ball. Again in a double boiler, I melted the white chocolate and then spooned into a sandwich bag.
I cut the tip-off, the small amount you cut off the thinner line you will have.
Happy Valentine's Day
I have always encouraged my kids to join me when I do any baking. I love recipes that include little-helping hands or now these days big kid hands. And these cake balls are one of those recipes.
When I make these cake balls I will always remember how they helped cheer up that little second grader of mine.
