We are all looking for quick and simple dinner ideas that our whole family will love, right?
This famous bowl is a recipe that fills all those criterias.
It’s a simple recipe that can be done in 30 minutes and my whole family loves these bowls. As an extra bonus, this is a budget-friendly meal. I was able to make this recipe for our family of 5 for under $14 dollars.
So this is a winner- winner- chicken dinner. Sorry, that’s my inner Guy Fieri coming out.
How To Make These Bowls
Every now and again I will ask my kids to help me out with dinner ideas. My son said that he really likes KFC famous bowls, so we made our copycat version.
I started by getting the frozen chicken tenderloins baked in the oven. I prepared these according to the package, they took about 25 minutes to bake.
Once the tenderloins were fully cooked I cut them into chunks, so you could use chicken nuggets as well. Or to make it a little healthier use grilled chicken breast.
While the oven was preheating I peeled and cut up the potatoes. Placing the potatoes into a saucepan I put them on the stove to cook until they were fork-tender.
We have used instant potatoes but I found that my kids didn’t like them as well as they do the homemade potatoes.
Making the homemade mashed potatoes only takes about 20 minutes. So while the chicken tenderloins are in the oven baking the potatoes can be on the stove cooking.
My tip for making creamy mashed potatoes is when you are mashing the potatoes to use a hand mixer. This basically whips the potatoes making them creamy.
However, to make them even more creamer, I like to add butter and milk to make them.
Assembling The Bowls
Once you have the potatoes made whether you are using instant or homemade potatoes.
It’s time to add some potatoes to a serving bowl.
The next layer is corn. The choice is yours whether you use canned or frozen corn. I used canned corn that I heated in the microwave.
Once the chicken tenders were fully cooked I cut them into chunks and placed them on top of the corn.
Now for the final step, covering it all with gravy. Again this is your choice you can make homemade gravy or do as I did and buy the jarred gravy.
I heated the gravy up in the microwave before I added it on top of other ingredients.
You could always sprinkle cheese on top of this as well.
When I assembled the famous bowls I kind of did an assembly line. I laid out 5 bowls and then filled each with a layer of each ingredient.
Normally I don’t plate everyone’s dinner so this was an extra treat for them you could say.
My thought of making these famous bowls was simple and quick. I wanted to make a meal that was semi-homemade and that could be done in under 30 minutes.
The first few times I made these bowls I used instant potatoes. In all honesty, the instant potatoes made the bowls taste bland. In my option, the homemade mashed potatoes are so much better.
I used chicken tenderloins because we wanted a meatier chicken. However, chicken nuggets would work as well.
In our home, frozen corn vs canned corn is a great debate. Some of us like canned and some like frozen. I’ll leave this up to you as to which you use.
Using the jarred gravy was easier because there would be fewer steps to making it.
You could sprinkle the top off all the ingredients in the bowl with some cheddar cheese for a little extra flavor.
