The words Crockpot potato and ham soup are above a bowl that is filled with the recipe.

It's that time of year when the weather starts to get colder. So while it might be colder outside let's warm up with this easy recipe for hearty Crockpot potato and Ham soup that is rich in flavor.

This delicious soup is made with chunks of hearty potatoes, diced ham, carrots, celery, diced onion, and minced garlic. For a richer flavor to the soup, we slow cook the ham and vegetables in chicken broth. To make this a creamy soup, sour cream, and heavy cream are added to the ham and tender vegetables.

This easy potato soup recipe is one of the best slow cooker recipes to enjoy on cold nights during soup season. It's an easy meal the entire family is sure to love. For those meatless nights try this easy Instant Pot broccoli cheddar soup.

How To Make Slow Cooker Ham And Potato Soup

This hearty soup recipe is easy to make with a few simple ingredients which means it's great for busy weeknights. We are going to start this soup off by peeling, rinsing, and then cutting 7 ½ cups of russet potatoes into cubes. Once the potatoes are all cut up place them into the crock pot.

All the ingredients needed for slow cooker potato and ham soup.

Moving on to the cup of carrots, I do peel the carrots before I chopped them into smaller cubes. You could also cut them into slices. Once the carrots are added to the crockpot we cut up enough celery to measure 1 cup worth. I always cut the ends of the celery stalk off and then wash the dirt off. Cut the celery stalks into chunks and add to the slow cooker.

One whole yellow onion is also chopped and added in with the rest of the ingredients. I'm a garlic kind of girl so I like to add about 1-2 teaspoons of minced garlic to the soup. I do use jarred minced garlic but fresh garlic will work in this recipe. If you are not a garlic fan then you could easily leave the garlic out.

A crock pot fill with diced ham, potatoes, carrots, celery, onions, and garlic for potato and ham soup.

When it comes to the ham I buy the 16-ounce packaged diced ham or chunks. This soup recipe is a great way to use up any leftover ham from the holidays or the next time you have a ham bone to use. Ham steaks will also work in this crockpot potato and ham soup recipe. The ham and chicken broth will bring in enough salt so I only season it with black pepper.

Cooking Time And How To Thicken The Soup

This crockpot ham and potato soup will need to slow cook for 7-8 hours on low or 4-5 hours on high. Once the vegetables are tender I like to mash the tender potatoes a bit with a potato masher. This will help with thickening the soup.

All-purpose flour is also used to thicken the soup. I like to make sure that this is all whisked in before adding the sour cream and heavy cream. Once these ingredients are all whisked in, place the lid back on the crockpot and cook on high for 15 minutes.

This last 15 minutes of the cooking time will really help to thicken this delicious slow cooker ham and potato soup up.

Questions Answered

How to store potato and ham soup?

Allow the soup to cool completely before placing it into an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Does ham and potato soup freeze well?

Because this crockpot potato and ham soup is made with sour cream and heavy cream it's not recommended to freeze. The cream will separate with freezing, this creates a grainy texture to the soup.

What to serve with this hearty soup?

We enjoy slices of crusty bread like our recipe for Bread Machine French bread or a store-bought loaf. Cheddar cheese or green onions is a great way to garnish this soup.

Are russet potatoes good to use in this soup?

Yes. Russet potatoes are high in starch and low in moisture, they lose their shape and soak up the liquid when cooking. This helps with thickening this creamy crockpot potato and ham soup.

Tips

Along with answering questions that might be helpful with this recipe, we like to offer any tips we have. The first tip is on how you cut your vegetables. I prefer to cut the potatoes into bigger chunks since they will break down some during cooking. The carrots I like in smaller chunks but slices will also work.

Mashing the potatoes up some after they have cooked will help with the thickening so I do recommend this step. I used a potato masher but an immersion blender would also work.

Chicken broth brings in more flavor but if you don't have any, vegetable broth or water mixed with bouillon will work. My favorite bouillion to use is better than bouillion.

Since the chicken broth and ham bring in enough salt I only season with black pepper. Garlic powder and onion powder would also add to the flavor of the soup if you don't have fresh garlic and onion to use.

Since this potato soup is made with heavy cream I wouldn't recommend it sitting out at room temperature for too long.

With the cold weather comes the need for comfort food as well as easy recipes. This rich flavor crockpot potato and ham soup is the perfect meal that the whole family is sure to love.

Recipe Notes

When it comes to the potatoes you could always add more potatoes and not mash as many up if you would like. Our family doesn't like a lot of potatoes nor do we like as many chunks.
