Instant Pot pork ribs are easy to make. Coated with a dry rub and cooked in apple juice for fall off the bone tender ribs.
Coat them with bbq sauce and place them in the oven for over the top baby back pork ribs.
This recipe was tested in both a 6 and 8 quart Instant Pot. The only difference was the amount of liquid use.
Dry Rub For Pork Ribs
One of the things that I love about my Instant Pot is how it takes less time with some recipe to cook then it would in the oven. This recipe along with my recipe for spaghetti is one my favorites to make.
The ribs are perfectly seasoned and fall off the bone tender.
The ingredients that are needed for the dry rub are:
- Black Pepper
- Garlic Powder
- Onion Powder
- Seasoning Salt
- Cajun Seasoning
In a small bowl mix all the seasonings together. Coat both sides of the ribs with the seasoning.
I like to remove the membrane that is on the backside of the ribs before I season them, but this is your preference.
How To Remove The Membrane
With the membrane on the ribs, they won’t be as fall off the bone as they would be without. The membrane will act as a barrier against the dry rub causing it not to be as flavorful as without the membrane.
To remove the membrane from the ribs flip them over so the bone side is up. You will see a thin translucent skin attached to the bone.
Starting at a corner and using a butter knife slip under the membrane to loosen the skin from the bone. However, sometimes you only need your fingers to get the skin loosened from the bones.
Once you have the skin loosened pull the membrane off with your hands. Sometimes I do have to go back and loosen the membrane in places. But for the most part, it will start to come off pretty easily.
How Long To Cook Ribs In The Instant Pot
Now that you have the membrane off and the ribs seasoned it’s time to get the Instant Pot ready.
For the 6-quart Instant Pot, I added 1 cup of apple juice into the inner pot. For the 8-quart, I added 2 cups of apple juice into the inner pot. The amount of liquid will depend on what size IP you are using.
I like to use apple juice or cider to give more flavor to the ribs. It mostly will depend on what I have in the house. Of course, you can always use water.
With the liquid in the inner pot add the trivet that came with your IP. Place the ribs on the trivet. You will need to kind of fold the ribs into a crescent shape.
Place the lid on your IP making sure the release valve is on sealing. Then press the high-pressure button. Adjust the cooking time to 20 minutes.
Your Instant Pot will have to come to pressure before the cooking time will start. That usually will take 5-20 minutes.
How To Get Crispiness To The Ribs
Once the cooking time is up let the IP do a natural release for 10 minutes. A natural release is when you let it set on its own without doing anything to the IP.
The pressure will naturally release from it, however, all the pressure might not release after the 10 minutes. So you will need to turn the release valve to release.
Remove the ribs from the Instant Pot, now you can sever them this way. Or you can place them on a baking sheet and coat them with your favorite bbq sauce. Then place them into a 400℉ oven for 15 minutes to crisp up the sauce some.

Instant Pot Pork Ribs
Instant Pot Pork Ribs that are seasoned with a dry rub cooked in apple juice for even more flavor. The coated in bbq sauce and baked to a delightful crispiness.
- 3 1/2 Pounds Ribs
- 2 Teaspoon Black Pepper
- 2 Teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 2 Teaspoon Onion Powder
- 2 Teaspoon Seasoning Salt
- 2 Teaspoon Cajun Seasoning
- 1 Cup Apple Cider See notes for 8-quart
- BBQ Sauce Optional
In a small bowl mix the seasonings together. Set aside.
To remove the membrane from the ribs start at a corner. Using a butter knife slip under the membrane to loosen the skin from the bone. Sometimes you only need your fingers to get the skin loosened from the bones. Once the skin loosened pull the membrane off with your hands.
Season both sides of the ribs with the seasonings.
Add the apple juice into the inner pot of your Instant Pot along with trivet.
Place the ribs into the inner pot onto the trivet. You will have to fold them a little to get them in.
Place lid on IP and turn the release valve to sealing.
Press the high-pressure button and adjust the cooking time to 20 minutes. It will take about 5-20 minutes for the IP to come to pressure.
Once the 20 minute cooking time is done do a natural release for 10 minutes. See notes for what natural release means.
After 10 minutes turn release valve to remove any pressure there might still be. Remove the lid from the IP.
You can sever now or you can coat them with your favorite bbq sauce. Place into a 400℉ oven for 15 minutes to add a little crispiness to them.
