Spice Storage Idea

Multiple pictures showing how to organize a spice cupboard.

Are you looking for an easy spice storage idea? This article will show you how to organize spice jars into categories using wooden spice racks.

I'm all about making life in the kitchen as easy and enjoyable as I can. I find that having certain areas organized helps when I'm baking or cooking.

Less time searching for cinnamon or baking soda more time doing what I love.

How To Organize A Spice Cabinet

In my kitchen, I like to have my baking supplies and ingredients organized which I showed you all in Easy to Organize a Baking Center.

I also find it easy to have our pantry well organized which I also showed you in How to Organize a Pantry. I'm excited to show you all how I have my spice cupboard organized.

Picture of an empty cupboard.

When organizing anything I find it best to start with an empty slate or in this case cupboard. Once all my spices were already removed I whipped each shelf down with a wet dishtowel.

To help save wear and tear on my shelves in each of my cupboards I put down a shelf liner. I find this type of shelf liner is great to use because it isn't adhesive-backed, which will damage the shelf if you ever remove it.

This cupboard was easy to fit for the shelf liner. Because I was able to remove the shelf and placed it on the liner for measuring. Using a pencil I traced the size of each of the shelves on the backside of the liner than cut the liner.

To help hold the liner to the shelf I used poster putty in each corner of the shelf, which doesn't hurt the shelf but does a great job at holding the liner in place.

Once I had my spices out of the cupboard, I organized them into three groups. Spices for baking, spices for cooking, and seeds.

This made it easy for deciding where to place them on the shelves.

Wooden Spice Racks

A cupboard that has two shelfs and each shelf has an empty spice rack on them.

The wooden spice rack that is on the bottom shelf I already had, I believe it came from Target. After taking note of all my spices I knew I would need another rack and one that was bigger.

Amazon has some great spice racks for inside cupboards or for on the countertop. I ended up purchasing this SpiceLuxe Bamboo 4 shelf rack. This rack did need to be assembled, assembly only took me a few minutes to do.

I was a little disappointed when I went to place the rack into my cupboard. Even though I measured my cupboard before purchasing the rack I thought I would be able to adjust my cupboard shelf up one more notch.

However, I wasn't able to. My solution to this problem was removing my top shelf, thankfully I didn't need it anyway with all this room that I had on the spice racks.

Placing the spices onto the shelves was easy since I had them in categories already.

On the bottom spice rack, I placed spices that are used the most when cooking. As you can see the first row has Seasoning salt, garlic salt, garlic powder, onions powder, roasted garlic, and tucked to the side salt and pepper.

These are the seasonings that I tend to go to when cooking.

The other two rows are filled with other spices that I use when cooking.

On the top rack, I placed the seeds at the very top since I don't use them as often. Making sure that the spices that I use most when baking were closer to my reach, I filled the rest of the shelf up.

Spice Storage Containers

Wanting to make my spice cupboard look nice I thought it was a good idea to make my own spice jars.

Using all the same type of jars and using my Cricut to make labels for each jar. Helped to make this a great Spice Storage Idea that can be done in any kitchen.

Once a month I go around the kitchen and refill any of my cooking and baking supplies that may need to be replenished. These jars are easy to refill since they have a removable cap.

When I'm doing my replenishing I also whip down the jars and take note of seasonings I may need to purchases before my next replenishment.

This DIY project didn't cost me much and was simple to do. Having all my Spices organized makes it easier when cooking and baking. And all my spices are easy to find since they are in categories and labeled clearly.

I would love to know how you choose to store the extra spices that don't fit in your "fancy" matching spice jars. I want to do this but worry about finding another place to store the extra spices. Do you store the extra in your pantry?? Do you keep them in baggies? Or in the original container?

Thank you for the great question. Once a month I do a refilling of these spices in my cupboard. I have found it easiest to keep the extra spices in the original containers. Except for the spices that I make of my own, I store those in mason jars. All the extra spices are then placed in a plastic basket, this makes it easier for refilling. Since all the extras are in one place and I can just carry the basket to the kitchen. We have a small storage room in our basement where I have an emergency food storage shelf. This is where I store the plastic basket full of my extra spices.
