Making homemade hamburger helper is easy to do and so much better than that boxed stuff. This recipe can be done in one skillet as well, so ditch that box stuff and keep reading.

I have quite a few recipes on the blog that use ground beef. That's because I feel it's so easy to work with when you are on a budget.

Adding a can of cream of mushroom soup to ground beef gives you the perfect Hamburger Gravy to serve over mashed potatoes.

Or by adding tomatoes and tomato sauce you can have the perfect Chili recipe.

How to make Homemade Hamburger Helper

I have this really large skillet that I use when I cook ground beef. Start by frying the ground beef in a large skillet. I add onion and minced garlic to cook along with the ground beef.

Not an onion or garlic fan, no problem you can always skip this step.

If you have been to My Creative Manner before then you know I love to use Lawry's seasoning salt when I cook.

Almost always when I brown ground beef I will season it with black pepper and Lawry's seasoning salt.

When the ground beef is completely cooked make sure to drain any grease there might be from cooking. A little tip I have is to keep a soup can under the kitchen sink to drain the grease into.

While the ground beef is browning go ahead and clean the mushrooms by running them under cold water.

Mushrooms are tender so I clean any dirt off of them by using my hand while running them under cold water. Once they are clean slice them into chunks and set aside.

Another tip I have whenever I use any kind of mixes in a recipe I will add it to a liquid first. This recipe I use a packet of Lipton Beefy Onion soup mix and brown gravy mix.

So in a measuring cup, I'll add 1 cup of my beef broth and both of the mixes. Mix the broth and both the mixes together so there are no clumps.

The next step is to add the broth and soup mixture to the ground beef along with the rest of the beef broth, mushrooms, and egg noodles.

Stir the ingredients together making sure the noodles are submerged in the beef broth.

Cover the skillet with a lid and cook for 10-12 minutes or until noodles are done. Be sure to stir every so often, this helps with making sure that nothing sticks to the bottom of the skillet.

And also that all the ingredients are getting a chance to cook evenly.

Tips For Homemade Hamburger Helper

If you don't have enough beef broth use as much as you have and then substitute the rest with water.

Or if you don't have any beef broth you can make your own real quick by using water and beef bouillon.

I'm a huge fan of Better Than Bouillon so that is all I use. I'll take a teaspoon and mix in into one cup of water until the bouillon paste is all dissolved.

If you have the cubes, I would recommend before starting to cook add one or two into a cup of water. To help it dissolve faster you could also pound the bouillon cubes with a meat mallet so it's in smaller pieces.

The egg noodle could be substituted with a rotini or farfalle (bow tie) the cooking time may change by using a different type of pasta.
