Chocolate Trifle Recipe

Chocolate Trifle is a great recipe if you love chocolate cake and chocolate pudding. Step by step pictures shows you how to make this Chocolate Trifle recipe.

It's a simple recipe to put together and is actually kind of fun to make.

It's the perfect dessert to take to a dinner party and fulfills everyone's sweet tooth. It looks pretty in this clear trifle bowl but will look great in any deep bowl.

Trifle Bowl that is fuilled with layers of chocolate cake, chocolate pudding and cool whip.

Chocolate Trifle Recipe Ingredients

  1. Devils Food Chocolate Cake Mix (and all the ingredients to make the cake)
  2. Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix (and the ingredients to make the pudding)
  3. Cool Whip (16 Ounces)
  4. Small Chocolate Chips

For the cake you can use any brand you prefer, Betty Crocker is what I happened to have in the pantry.

I prefer to use the Devil's food chocolate cake mix because it has a richer flavor than a chocolate cake mix. This is also your preference.

I started out by following the directions to make the cake that is on the back of the box.

Chocolate cake cut into 1 inch squares.

After I prepared and baked the cake in a 9x13 baking pan, I then cut the cake up into little squares.

Chocolate pudding in a glass bowl with a whisk in the pudding.

For the instant pudding, I also followed the directions on the back of the box.

I used two of the smaller boxes only because my store didn't have a large box of the chocolate instant pudding.

Layering The Trifle

Chocolate cake squares being layered into a glass trifle bowl.

It's time for the fun part of making the trifle. In a glass trifle bowl or any deep dish bowl, start with a layer of the cake squares.

I used half of the cake for the first layer than the rest for the second layer.

Layer of chocolate pudding in the glass trifle bowl.

The next layer will be a layer of the chocolate instant pudding. I used half of the pudding for this layer and then the other half will be used for the next pudding layer.

Cool Whip layer of the trifle.

Half of the 16-ounce tub of Cool Whip is what I used for the layer over the pudding.

Mini Chocolate Chip layer of the trifle.

On top of the Cool Whip layer, I sprinkled mini chocolate chips. This is up to you how many to use, I just grabbed a handful to sprinkle on.

The more the better is always a great way to go.

Repeat Layers

Glass trifle bowl that is filled with chocolate layers and cool whip.

Once I sprinkled the mini chocolate chips on I repeated my layers. Starting again with the cake, then pudding, cool whip, and more mini chocolate chips sprinkled on top.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.

If your family is at all like mine this dessert will not last long. I have seen a few of my family members eating right out of the trifle bowl.

Hope your family enjoys this Chocolate Trifle Recipe as much as mine does
