Homemade meatballs baked with sauce then are piled onto a hoagie bun. Topped with provolone cheese and baked in the oven for the best Meatball Sandwich ever. Meatball sandwiches make for a great lunch or dinner recipe.
Famous Meatball Recipe
I find that having a recipe that can be made in many ways is great for prepping meals ahead of time. Take my Homemade Meatball recipe.
Today I’m going to show you how I used my famous meatball recipe to make meatball sandwiches.
These also might be called subs, grinders or hoagies.
I’m calling them yummy goodness that you all need to try.
To start making the sandwiches I needed to make a batch of my homemade meatballs.
Since I was making the meatballs for subs, I made the size of my meatballs a little larger. I ended up with 22 meatballs but only used a total of 18.
Delicious Sandwich in the making
One of my favorite things about getting subs at a Pizza place is that they are oven-baked and crispy.
To achieve that crispiness I covered the tops of the hoagie buns with butter placing each bun on a cookie sheet.
Adding three meatballs into each bun I then placed three thin slices of provolone cheese on top of the meatballs.
Closing the bun top as much as I could onto the meatballs.
Placed on the lower rack of a 350℉ oven for 10 minutes or until cheese is completely melted.
What To Serve With A Meatball Sandwich
This meatball sandwich is a meal in itself. I found that serving potato chips with this sandwich to be the perfect match.
You could make half a sandwich and then serve your favorite soup along with it.
My friend Nancy at The Mama Haven has an amazing Butternut Squash and Apple soup that would be a great complement to this meatball sub.
I love butternut squash soup and this recipe from Nancy is also a win because it can be made in the Instant Pot.

Once the meatballs are made and cooked drain fat from the baking dish. Add your favorite pasta sauce over top of the meatballs. Place back into the 350℉ oven for 15 minutes.
While the meatballs and sauce are baking you can prep the sub buns. Spread the desired amount of butter on top of each sub bun and place on a cookie sheet.
Sprinkle each of the buns with garlic powder and parsley flakes.
When the meatballs and sauce are done cooking add 3 meatballs to each sub bun.
Place three thin slices of provolone cheese on top of each meatball prepared sub. Close the top of the sub buns onto the meatballs as much as you can.
Place into 350℉ oven on the lower rack for 10 minutes. Or until the cheese is completely melted. If you like crispy subs then you could leave in longer.
